Used Zapp once, startup screen changed (Answered)

I tried using Zapp one time, since then my start up screen changed. Now each time I start ZBrush, there’s a red flashing dot to the left of the word “ZBRUSH”, and the tools at the bottom have disappeared. How do I get rid of the flashing red dot and get my old startup screen back?

To initialize the startup screen you need to delete the “StartupScript_RecentFiles.mem” in the ZStartup->ConfigFiles folder.

Should this be filed as a bug? Has it been yet?

Any chance we’re going to get a feed of known bugs so we don’t inundate you with existing / known issues?

If Joe52 is using version 3.12 then it’s certainly not a bug because we haven’t released ZAppLink for 3.12 yet.

If he’s using a different version of ZBrush, we’d need more info to be able to figure out what may have happened.

I’m using ZBrush v3.1 and Zapp Link v3 under a Windows Vista OS, and 2 GB RAM machine. When I ran Zapp, ZBrush crashed, but PhotoShop was still running. When I restarted ZBrush, I noticed the change in the startup screen, especially the red dot flashing. Before this happened, I’ve been having a 2-3 minute wait for compact mem/reading virtual mem. I had used ZBrush for a nonorganic build with six subtools at level 1, each uses 1,056 faces. Compact mem/reading virtual mem started to take 2-3 minutes when I was making the textures for the subtools. I was using Image Plane to poly paint the subtools from a photographs and had to use Level 7 subdivision to get some detail in the texture, no sculpting was done beyond level 1. When I first tried to polypaint, ZBrush wouldn’t transfer a graphic until I did a subdivide level 4, but the image was poor until I got to level 6. I was trying to keep all the tools in subtools so that when I used Material Baker I would get shading from each of the subtools that formed the build. I would set the subtool that I was adding detail to visible and set the others to hidden. The final build is using Level 1 subdivision with the higher level subdivision for a skin to give the appearance of a higher poly count.

I set Compact mem to 2026 and Tool Undo to 20. All the remaining settings were left default. This has not made any noticible reduction in the compact mem/read virtual mem. The memory line at the top shows:
Compact mem 1205+8211 Free 173
Reading Virtual mem 1302+8116 Free 109.

Besides what is causing the red flashing dot on the startup screen and how to eliminate it, any suggestions on compact mem/reading virtual mem given the settings I’m using, and any way to be able to get a shadow/ligitng map without the overhead?

Joe52: Did you delete the “StartupScript_RecentFiles.mem” as suggested in the first reply ?

The only file in that folder was Zbrush2.cfg.

can someone help, also trying to spend 2 days to try to polypaint and then bake, what should be done in 2 hours is ridiculous.

Something is clearly interfering with ZBrush’s ability to do what it’s been programmed to do. There should always be three files in the ConfigFiles folder. Two of them are automatically generated by ZBrush if it launches and sees that they’re not present. Since that’s not happening, something is wrong. It may be a bad plugin that you’ve installed, or it may be that some of your plugins are conflicting with each other. Or you might have a virus.

At this point my recommendation is to uninstall ZBrush, then delete its folder. Then reinstall ZBrush. You’ll need to do a license recovery through Pixologic support, but it’s the only way to ensure that ZBrush is restored to its original state.
