Used look on edges (scratches in paint with metal underneath)

Hi folks!

I tried several things to achieve this typical used look on the edges of a hard surface model (like scratches in paint with showing the blank metal underneath). But I still find it hard to combine polypainting and modeling in one go.

Right now I use a b&w grunge map to use spotlight for sculpting the edges. So far so good.
But how do I paint the blank metal now? Is there a way to mask the lower parts of the model?
Or is it possible to just use spotlight for sculpting and using a color from the colorpicker for painting?

Or is it just about painting the different parts in another step? That would be very tedious regarding the high detail of the grunge map.

How do you do something like this?

Cheers,
David
