Upgrading to 4 gigs of RAM and an 64 bit operating system.

Now that the same RAM that is in my computer is down from 300 bucks to about 50 bucks, I’m thinking its time to buy another 2 gigs of Ram for my Desktop. What would have the most performance enhancement over my current 2 gigs of RAM Windows XP Professional 32 bit?

Windows Vista 64bit Ultimate

The more expensive one that comes in the box?

Windows XP 64?

Or Ubuntuu 64 or any other Linux Distro? Can Zbrush even run on linux?

ZBrush is not officially supported on Linux. In other words, if you want to go Linux we won’t stop you – but you’re on your own.

Alright that rules out one choice. But will future iterations be linux friendly? I think there would be a market for it soon.

So which WIndows Iteration would be preferable?

I have 4 Gigs of ram and was using Win XP32 for a while and just recently upgraded to Windows XP64. Big difference, performance for 3D apps is amazing, and Zbrush can now use all the ram. I can divide to higher levels and just general performance has increased by quite a bit. Well worth it.

What type of poly counts can you reach? And how about full model polygons? I can comfortably display about 2 million polys per object in realtime. I can reach 10 million polys but it become really sluggish to work with. Even if you mask out sections.

I have a Q6600 Intel Quad-core with 4 GB of ram running Vista Ultimate x64

I can get a single tool up in the 11 - 12 million polygon range before performance really becomes an issue

with multiple subtools I’ve pushed up to 16 - 17 million polygons total and haven’t tried to go any further

Can you upgrade to either XP 64 or vista 64, without having to erase all programs on your C drive?

your mainboard must be able to support 4gb, otherwise you can forget it.
xp 32bit supports 3gb of ram even if 4gb were obstructed - i know it!
A 64Bit System supports the complete 4GB Ram!

My motherboard is the ASUS P5B-E P965 775. It looks like it can take up to 8 gigs.

Why do you want more Ram?
Is it only because of the price?
The CPU’s and not the Ram plays a big roll if you want to render with this pc.

um, he probably wants more ram because thats mainly what zbrush uses. hopefully with 3.5 it will be able to use all of that if not more.

I use a Q6600 with 8 gigs and its fantastic. (Win XP 64)
ZB uses or should I say NEEDS a big engine and lots of ram space to really fly at high res work.
Avoiding the Harddisk layoff is an absolutely necessity for continuous and reactive workflow.

This system is about the best bang for the buck available right now.
If you have the cash then by all means go to the big CPU’s but it will cost you a lot and the win is marginal.

What type of poly counts are you getting with 8 gigs? I wasn’t planning on going that high, due to having to replace all of my Ram. Isn’t it best to stick with the same ram module for all for 4 RAM slots?
