Unified Skin misses parts of 3D-Cube

I draw a cube on canvas, make it polymesh, lower resolution and smooth in the unified skin menu to lowest and press make unified skin.
But instead of getting a nice cube some of the parts got stolen.

Whats going wrong?

In 3.5 the unified skin algorithm is different.

The best way now to get what you want is simply to select the PolySphere3D again (it was automatically selected at launch) and use Tool>Geometry>Reconstruct SubDiv several times. When you get down to only six polygons, this will be a cube.
