undo, materials and symmetry questions

A few quick questions:

1)I am trying to align a mesh to an imageplane (using imageplaneX)- i am moving and scaling the plane to fit the head of the mesh. if i hit CTRL-Z attempting to undo a move or scale my texture vanishes off of my image plane. Why is this happening?

  1. When I then try to assign the proper material back to the image plane, it applies it to both my plane and my mesh, how do I make it apply only to one of the subtools?

  2. Somehow during this process the symmetry on my mesh is getting messed up where if I use x symmetry one side is a little further out off the mesh, any ideas why or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Without knowing what technique you’re using to move and scale, it’s hard to say. Some mesh transformations are document-related rather than tool-related. I also don’t even know which version of ZBrush you’re using: 3.1 or 3.12.

You should be able to fix it using Smart ReSym. Mask the good side of the model and then use Tool>Deformation>Smart ReSym. Start at the lowest level and apply the deformation at each level, working your way up.

Thank you so much for answering questions 2 and 3! on question 1 I am using Zbrush 3.1, another odd thing is I have set my undo’s on the document and tool to 15 each, sometimes i will goto the undo menu and it will show undo’s available but they are grayed out and unselectable, I dont undstand why

You’re seriously crippling your system with those undo settings. You’re forcing ZBrush to keep 15 states of the canvas and the model in memory at all times, no matter how badly ZBrush may need that memory for other things. This alone may be part of your problem. You should never set those values above the default of 4 unless you absolutely need them for a short term reason.

I originally had it set to 4 and still had the same problem. I will use your recommendation and set them back to 4. But aside from that, I am still confused as to why CTRL-Z is undoing a material on the mesh. I am loading the tools and using the pose tools to scale and move, and say I move or scale too far and want to undo, i hit CTRL-Z and the material will undo instead. Any ideas why or what im doing wrong?

Thanks again for any help I sincerely do appreciate it!
