Unable to animate zspheres (answered)

Hi, I tried making a simple zsphere rig and animating it in the timeline. No luck.

The docs say ZBrush automatically selects the timeline for the item you edit. Yet, when I edit zspheres the timeline remains on Camera.

I have tried manually setting the timeline edit mode to zspheres and creating keys but it still does not work. Non of my sphere edits get stored with the keyframes.

Am I missing something? zspheres are listed in the timeline edit list. Is there something i am missing?
Thanks?

Hmmm, no bites…

Well I did a bit more digging in the docs and found that the info a bit confusing. And if I understand it, completely disappointing.

It seems that all you can animate with this is the subdivision level of ZSpheres in the current Tool.

“7.7 ZSphere
This track is dedicated to the ZSphere animation of the Subdivision levels of the current
Tool or SubTool as set by the Subdivision level slider located in the Tool >> Geometry
menu.”

Seems odd that you cannot animate the position, orientation and scale of the actual ZSpheres.

That bit of the docs is a typo (the next entry has been copied by accident). Thanks for pointing that out.

The ZSphere track is not for animation but controls the ZSphere Preview mode, allowing it to be toggled on and off. (This is because you might want to demonstrate how you had created the model/rig).

For animating ZSpheres, you need to use their 3D Layers. This gives you a lot of control because you can have several layers acting independently, copy keyframes and so on.

EDIT: I’ve updated the online docs :

HTH,

Just saw this reply. Thanks Marcus!
