UHF-Head WIP

Happy New Year,

lemonnado – Thanks, just a curious effect I stumbled upon while playing… will probably chase it later (need to export the mesh with different settings – right now it’s topology is too stressed.)

markkens – Thanks… and yes, I agree it’s a distracting bit of geometry… as mentioned, I’ll revisit the sculpt at some point with a more suitable mesh.

Here’s a follow-up on the ringScout ship.

Still a few things I’d like to do… there are some nice little fit&finish details that need to be completed (fillets, bevels base-plates, etc.) Some already in place – 'tho not easy to see in these renders).

Polypaint is pretty hasty – just wanted to get the feel.

Best Wishes for 2010,
Darrel

this is an interesting thread for sure, showing your pipeline between the two applications. Can suggest that you take your last posted model and take some time out on it with all the wonderful detailing tools in Zbrush???. get some small dents, some rough areas, some bullet holes perhaps, just really work some time consuming interesting details in, whcih in fact wont take too long in ZBrush, but I guarantee if you take you time and work them and stretch a little you wont look back. Even use Geometry HD. Enjoy, and Happy New Year
Arran

wow Im lovin ya lst few pages really good…Man that style would look awsome in engine…Congrats GroBoto…your styles blazin away…
so impressed with the progress…Downloading trial…Will buy this awsome tool set…

Hello Arran,

Thanks. Yes I agree, and I hope to find the time to detail this and many of the other sculpts in this thread. I’ve held off for several reasons. Improvements & new options to GroBoto’s mesh export will make those tasks even more enjoyable (additional masking/grouping/UV options, and more fluid meshes). Also, I have so many models to try out (many dozen)… given my very limited time for playing in ZB (and art in general), I find it wise not to lock in on any one piece – keep the learning and discovery as broad as possible.

All that said – and please keep in mind, I agree with your suggestions – I have related thoughts…

I love spending time laying in detail – it can be a rewarding, almost meditative, phase in any medium. I’ve visited often, but have, & will always, come back. I tend to prefer art that evokes & implies – rather than delineates & describes. Art that is detailed, photoreal, concrete, leaves the viewers mind no room to roam.

There are ways to get there in 3D CG… lighting, atmospherics, motion effects. Less explored are ways to achieve that sort of evocative work on the geometric level, but it can be done. I hope to go exploring there eventually.

It’s all engaging. I marvel at, and truly appreciate, the high levels of rigor, art, and craft exhibited in the works here… and also really enjoy the work by artists here who chose very non-photoreal styles. Part of the beauty of ZB, is it’s extraordinary range.

But again, yes… these recent works (many of which resemble static metal sculptures) can only be helped by pushing that notion further through detailing.

Best Wishes & Happy New Year to you,
Darrel

Hey DELTATHUND3R,

Thanks… I’m learning (and at the same time the tools are evolving) – makes it all fun.

I went back for another pass at the ‘stereoRover’ posted earlier in this thread. Always felt I was to timid in my sculpting, and was not happy with the original polypaint.

Liking it better now… 'tho still a wip, and could benefit from some detailing and more thoughtful polypaint… and ultimately a decent try at rendering.

Best Wishes,
Darrel

Great little design there for your Rover!

Can’t wait to get my hands on Groboto 3.0!

Yeah, this is great, my kind of thing. Great stuff:D

very original look and style you got going there

I look forward to more!

All of your work is great, it has this steam-punk retro look to it that I love.

AgentSmith - Good to hear from you again… thanks. Right, in fact 3.0 development is dominating my time… and will for a while. Hope to have some significant time for Art in a couple of months.

Marz 183 - Thanks. Originality – 'tho I do value it, and strive for it – is mostly a side effect of the way I think & work… combined with the unique path that brought me here.

EricShawn - Thanks. Yes… part of the appeal for me is the intersection of Art/Science/Craft that is found in so much 19th and early 20th century technology – curiously, 3D CG seems to mix the same elements.

Here’s a Poster treatment of the BelloScope (workflow & more images posted earlier in this thread). Going for more of a Illustration style here, rather than Photorealism – in fact would probably like to tilt further in that direction.

… just needed to do something that wasn’t an object floating in the ZBrush void.

Best Wishes,
Darrel

BelloScope 8))) Brilliant.
Lemo :+1: :+1: :+1:

Da Vinci would love it… :+1:

Another Beauty!
A masterful splash screen for my iPod, cool!

lemonnado - Thanks Lemo.

SpiritDreamer - Thank you… perhaps he could tell me how it works.

nimblepix - Thanks, right… nice that tall vertical compositions have a place in the digital realm (4:3 was the worst aspect ratio ever… at least 16:9 has taken over for landscape comps).

Here’s a runaway test… I was just trying to find my way around ZB – specifically Lights & Render/Environment settings…

…got sucked into making art. A bit unfortunate because the robot was exported from GroBoto a while ago (see earlier in this thread), to test some specific things about our meshes – not set up for posing.

So this piece has some core limitations that leave me knowing it could be better (esp. a more compelling pose).

Still, I learned a lot, and with some Photoshop work, I feel it became a viable image.

Darrel

Really striking! Reminds me of a night dive I did a while ago. When you are switching of the lights deep down at night and let the eyes adapt, then strange things become visible, and when you wave your arms fast through the water chemiluminescence of microorganisms is creating mesmerizing tracer lines. I was so captivated once that I nearly ran out of air lol… Looking at your groboto image is much safer 8))).
Lemo

Hey Lemo,

Thanks… I envy your experience – never been diving (a bit of snorkeling here and there is all). Nonetheless – I really enjoy that ‘sense of place’ in real or virtual worlds… hope to continue to chase that sort of imagery.

Here’s a followup on the previous ‘bioillume’ post – a look at the elements that went into constructing the simple environment.

Best Wishes,
Darrel

Mix Groboto Zbrush make amazing results!

Hey Frenchy,
Thanks… yes – a natural fit, getting more interesting a capable every day.

Getting back to this character… (see a few pages back in this thread for it’s genesis).

A test of a pose & lighting with the intent of placing him in an environment. Just ‘placeholder’ polypaint so I can get a sense of overall palette.

Still some modeling to do, then I’ll go back and revisit materials & polypaint.

Best Wishes,
Darrel

Really exciting adventure that your exploring…Totally new and very pleasurable visual sensations everytime I enter your sketchbook…Always keeps me coming back for more and to see what’s next in this evolution of creation… :+1:

Thanks SpiritDreamer… you know that I enjoy watching your quest as well.

I’m planning on putting these two elements into a little simple scene. These are just lighting & texture tests. Some very minor tweaks to the character since my previous post.
