Hello Arran,
Thanks. Yes I agree, and I hope to find the time to detail this and many of the other sculpts in this thread. I’ve held off for several reasons. Improvements & new options to GroBoto’s mesh export will make those tasks even more enjoyable (additional masking/grouping/UV options, and more fluid meshes). Also, I have so many models to try out (many dozen)… given my very limited time for playing in ZB (and art in general), I find it wise not to lock in on any one piece – keep the learning and discovery as broad as possible.
All that said – and please keep in mind, I agree with your suggestions – I have related thoughts…
I love spending time laying in detail – it can be a rewarding, almost meditative, phase in any medium. I’ve visited often, but have, & will always, come back. I tend to prefer art that evokes & implies – rather than delineates & describes. Art that is detailed, photoreal, concrete, leaves the viewers mind no room to roam.
There are ways to get there in 3D CG… lighting, atmospherics, motion effects. Less explored are ways to achieve that sort of evocative work on the geometric level, but it can be done. I hope to go exploring there eventually.
It’s all engaging. I marvel at, and truly appreciate, the high levels of rigor, art, and craft exhibited in the works here… and also really enjoy the work by artists here who chose very non-photoreal styles. Part of the beauty of ZB, is it’s extraordinary range.
But again, yes… these recent works (many of which resemble static metal sculptures) can only be helped by pushing that notion further through detailing.
Best Wishes & Happy New Year to you,
Darrel
