Hi Darrel,

These are all really nice
Tell me, can you import your own objects into groboto too?

Cheers
H

Hi RawSunlight,

Thanks - much appreciated.
No, GroBoto can not import any geometry. It takes advantage of true parametric geometry to pull off most of it’s tricks – from real-time full render Boolean Modeling to Automated Mesh Generation. Meshes do not exist in GroBoto until the are generated for output.

Heres a set up for a new bit of exploration. Inspired by stumbling into some nice ‘Upholstery’ techniques a few days ago, based on GroBoto Meshes & Masks.

Hope to take this rather harsh looking ‘Throne’ and turn it into a Comfy Recliner. Did a little testing on various cushion treatments in ZBrush.

Chair frame is rough – just something I had kicking around – will play a bit in GroBoto before bringing into ZB… Should be a good place to try out some more hard surface techniques as well.

OK, so the ‘Throne’ morphed into a flying Recliner…

This is early WIP stuff, just meandering around the design in GroBoto, and some trial meshing./OBJ import to see how things look. More GroBoto detailing to come, and then ZB sculpting.

Will use this to explore a lot of the techniques I’ve been playing with here over the last couple of weeks. No chance of taking this to some high level of finish & render (no time, and way too many other ideas/models kicking around – need to stay on the main task, GroBoto itself).

This is part of a loose series of designs called Nickel Age. Sort of like the ‘Diesel Age’ stuff a lot of folks have been pursuing, but a slightly different take. Inspired by that pre-WWII era of heavy/robust, yet streamlined & artful machines & architecture.

It’s the ultimate LaZBoy!!!

Awesome concept, the structures you invent are consistently flawless and very fun to look at.

Very interesting stuff. I was wondering if the seams between the primatives import into ZBrush as seperate polygroups or is it just between the primatives themselves?

Oh I see, nice model

Wow,I have GroBoto 2.1.8 and would export obj to zbrush and make unified skin,
and never like the mesh it would make,Is Semnet Unified Mesh only in v 3 of
groboto? I would use It a lot more If I could make obj that clean.

Good job. Fresh and interesting ideas. Thanks for the models.

Nice concept, Darell.:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

This is really inspirational Darrel.
I’m looking forward to going through the tutorials.

Great stuff going on Darrel!

I bought Groboto for the super keen booleans but was unaware that there was no ability to import a mesh and that, because of how it’s designed, there will never be that ability.

Quick question… Any chance the ability to import some form of image format to use as a reference will be added at some point? From what I understand now there is no way to load an image for reference, which to me limits Groboto’s ability to work and play with other apps.

Thanks,

Sam

Thanks for all of the comments…

You might get a kick out of the ‘Who Can it Be Thread’ (see bottom of this post).

Skadalilama - truly appreciate it.

Hi zber2 - Yes, you can choose to group your OBJ (which translate to ZB PolyGroups on import), by Primitives, Patches (areas surrounded by seams), and a few other options – all of which are useful. If you scan backwards through this thread, you’ll see many examples, including lots of sculpting based on those polygroups.

Hey michalis – Yes Exactly, I had that movie bouncing around in my head while working on this piece… just happened to watch it again just a year ago.

Hi window1 – Right, please go to the site and get the beta – link below (if you are running Windows, you might want to wait a day… better mesh support in the next Beta Build). Mac Build will be refreshed in a day or two also.

saltapiedras – you are quite welcome – I’ll keep posting models here and on the beta site. Would love to see what people come up with.

Hey markkens – Good to hear from you again

Hi nimblepix – Thanks, I’ll try to keep the videos coming… many fun techniques emerging.

Please check out the
Who Can it Be Now…? Thread
…just posted a new ‘BoolToon’ head mesh. Here’s a mini preview:

Thought I’d post this ‘BoolToon’ workkup here… probably as far as I’ll go – many other things to explore – really just fooling around at this point.

You can see the progression from a simple GroBoto Mesh here:
Who Can it Be Now…? Thread

…and as usual, you can find his basemesh and others to download & play with here: Download the ZTL, OBJ, and/or GroBoto files here..

Hi everyone,
Just a bit of progress on the ‘Glider’…

Added some details in GroBoto, tweaked some of the primitives as well as the overall form (stretched everything out a bit – felt it was all a bit too compact). Also set up some groups for ZB subtools (or at least un-unified chunks of the mesh – there are parts of the model that I want to be separate in ZBrush).

Again, just a tiny bit of exploratory ZB here… still one unified mesh. Looking forward to sculpting…

I like this, you’re trying to keep it a clean groboto sculpt but I can also imagine what a few strokes, textures can do.
One I noticed: these small round holes on the elliptical part, booleans. I experienced some crashes when tried a similar boolean operation, I was using a 3 cluster-group though. Not real crash, I could delete and fix the problem without rebooting groboto. I already downloaded the new build, nice one.

Hi michalis,

Thanks.
I hope to do some real sculpting on this one (there is really no sculpting so far). I want to go well beyond the clean GroBoto geometries. I agree – that is where it gets interesting, when the strengths of these two tools are combined.

I’ve attached jpegs of an old piece that goes in that direction (but I think much more is possible now).

There is also a full illustration treatment if that older model here:

Nice one, love it, some alpha treatment could be nice too.
BTW (for avoiding bottomrow thumps, edit the ATT as ATN) Just reminding

Thanks michalis,

Yes, in fact I use GroBoto to make Alphas…
Here are links to some in use, and a snap of a few I use often…

Right. I know about ATN (I used attachments with that last image pair to avoid cluttering up this already overloaded thread with images that already appear in earlier posts). You didn’t see any additional bottom row thumbs did you? – should not be any with attachments.

Hi everyone,

Revisiting some ‘Bot’ (interactive algorithmically assisted modeling) in GroBoto – like many things, it’s yielding much nicer results with all of the advancements in modeling/meshing/smoothing/export.

michalis’ reminder about alphas prompted me to include a little work with one here… GroBoto-Generated as well.

All of this was a matter of minutes – a few in GroBoto, a few more in ZBrush – all a bit too hasty. But I see great potential for creature creation – in a couple of week I should be able to free up some reasonable chunks of time for all of these recent explorations.
