Hi all!..
just was reading Distrowatch ( http://distrowatch.com/ ) and noticed that Ubuntu Linux has moved to #4 Beating out SUSE for popularity!!!
I have Ubuntu installed on both of my systems… It is Debian Based, and Warty (the codename for stable release) is quite stable…
If you are a WIngs3d or a Blender user you will see a Significant preformance boost in linux…
To install Blender, just download the non-static version, unzip the blender folder into your Home folder, and Copy the .blender folder it unzips into your HOME folder… that is it
For wings, just download the linux build to your \home\yourname\ folder and do this from commandline…
sudo sh wings.Rest.Of.The.Filename.Here.run.gz… thats it you now have wings instaled into your HOME folder
If your want blender and WIngs to execute from any commandline, just make a symbolic link in /user/local/bin folder…
Well anyways… Ubuntu is verry fast… the installer is very easy to understand… the IRC channel is full of Employed Linux Gurus to help you out…
and if you use XFce your file browser will hack your network connection for you, so you can use SAMBA and access windows systems, and network devices like scanners and printers, without Disableing your windows firewall or makeing you set turn on File shareing on your windows system… all it will ask you is your user name and Password 8) …
before shelling out the money for redhat or SUSE you might want to try Ubuntu first , If you like it you can leave the Ubuntu people a nice Tip
be sure to go to the forums and follow the New Ubuntu users guied… Lots of stuff for Noobies, adept users, and Gurus…
I really love my Ubuntu partitions… Very customized
When you get tired of all the UBUNTU packages, all you have to do is a couple of tweaks and you have almost Full access to the Debian Apt repositories… If i am not Mistaken Debian has the Biggest number of software titeles available from APT…
I love this, I can install and play with lots of software, and i dont have to worry abou malware or Virus! (in apt- repositories… there are lots of linux virus and spyware now, be sure to get Clam antivirus installed { sudo apt-get install clamav })
well have fun with your ubuntu!
