???Two Texture Menus??? in Zbrush 3.5 R3

I am a bit confused as to why there are two different texture menus.

Could some one please explain the difference between the two? (The one at the left (in default menu layout) and the one at the right under the drop down texture menu?

I have noticed a few things so far. I will refer to the texture selector at the left as the “Original” and the one under the drop down menu as the “new one”

#1 The Original will not apply or remove the texture from the model.

#2 The Original is used for importing and exporting textures

#3 To load the texture on the model it has to be imported using the Original texture and then click Clone Texture, and then select it using the new one texture drop down.

#4 I can’t Polypaint after loading the texture map. It must be done on a new blank texture. It will not work with either the Original or the New slot.

I am trying to load a texture map, and then paint additional details on the model in zbrush (while loaded in the new texture drop-down), and then export that map.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The two texture menus have two different purposes.

*The main Texture menu is for importing textures into ZBrush and using them in a wide variety of ways such as for background images, for polypainting and so on.

*The Texture Map submenu in the Tool palette is specifically for applying texture maps to your model. It is now possible to have a different texture applied to every subtool which is the reason for this change. Simply click the thumbnail and select the texture from the pop-up.

Polypainting is separate from a texture map - for a start, you don’t need UVs - so you can’t polypaint with a texture map applied to your model.

There are two ways to do what you want:

  1. Load your texture and apply it to the model. Use Projection Master to paint new details on to your texture map.

  2. Load your texture and apply it to the model, then convert it to polypaint. You can then paint new details directly on the model before converting the polypaint to a new texture. Note for polypainting you model must have sufficient polygons to support the detail (at least a million).

The two methods are explained in more detail here:

Thanks marcus_civis that is exactly what I was looking for!

What I was struggling to find was the polypaint from texture button. I assumed it would be under the texture menu like in past versions, thanks again!
