Two materials on the same mesh

Hey, I have a general question about materials.
I have a model of a sword in Maya and would like to use zbrush for the detailing, the sword itself is one mesh (hilt and blade) naturally I want the blade to be a silver reflective material while the hilt something a lot less refrective. would I need to break it apart in to two meshes or is there a way to assign diffrent materials to parts of a mesh?
