trying to "sketch"

I have found some threads that sort of relate to my query, and the image of the flower located here: http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/features/01_UI/ seems to suggest it is possible to use Zbrush for sketching and painting like Photoshop or Sketchbook Pro.

I have gotten use to colour and brush changing and got the document to a plain canvas state, but I am still having a few issues. Mostly to do with the media I am applying to the canvas.

I feel like I can’t escape the blobblyness of 2.5D painting to achieve good old fashioned 2D. I think the attached image shows what I mean. I would like to achieve this without lashing out for a license for sketchbook pro, which I can love for another 16 days!

Any help, or tips would be greatly appreciated. A tutorial to creating that flower image would be fantastic.

fill the canvas with soemthing

ctrl+F…whatever color you’d like the canvas to be
turn on the flat color material
switch to any brush (i use the single layer brush) pick a color, have at it.

hope that helps.

Thanks chap, that was just what I needed.

There’s no need to select the Flat Color material. You can simply switch off MRGB and switch on RGB (for color only, no material) and switch off ZAdd or ZSub so that no depth information is painted. Experiment with all the different 2.5D brushes and also try the different options in the Stroke palette. Also try different alphas. Another thing is to select a 3D ZTool such as the PolyMesh3D (star) and then change the Stroke type to Freehand. Adjust the spacing with the Spacing slider and try with ZAdd on as well as off.

Have fun!
