I use Zbrush quite a bit and would like to know if there are reverses from accidentally hitting ‘fill layer’ or other unknown buttons like when I forget to click ‘rename’ before I start clicking keys. It is unfortunate that ‘control+z’ doesn’t escape mistakes like these. I would also like to find what I have done, because I can’t fix it if I don’t know what it is.
Zbrush 2019 is fantastic.
It sounds like you are running afoul of 2.5d functions vs 3d edit functions. Ctrl-Z is context sensitive–it will undo many 2.5 d functions, but only when you are not in edit mode with an active 3d tool/subtool. Believe me, you wouldnt want it the other way–allow me to explain.
When you are in edit mode with an active 3d subtool, Ctrl-z only applies to changes made to that subtool. It would be confusing if it also affected some other tool that wasnt visible at the time that you switched away from 5 actions ago. Likewise, for rendering purposes, the 2.5d document background (document canvas) and the active 3d tools are meant to be independent of one another, so you can make infinite changes to a 3d tool, while still posing it in the same visual worldspace–this is fundamental to ZB’s origins as an illustration tool.
I’m not sure how you are accidentally filling the layer–this page lists the fill layers shortcut as Ctrl-F, but that now seems to control folder naming. This is “fixed” with Ctrl-N (clear layer) btw, but what should happen when you activate a 2.5 d function like that, is it switches you out of edit mode (t) and into draw mode, and fills the 2.5 d layer (as opposed to 3d layers) with Pixols. At that point, ctrl-z should work to undo that 2.5d fill, or any other 2.5 changes youve made to the document.
What is probably tripping you up though, is that you need to re-enter edit mode (t) with your active subtool in order to get back to where you were. Ctrl-Z will not re-activate edit mode for you.
