Troubles with obj Import/Export (Poser)

With ZBrush3 I have a serious problem with import/export of .obj.

I want to make morphs for Victoria4 (a Daz character that I use with Poser). I export the head from Poser. I import it in ZB3 (in the preferences/importexport I turn off iFlipY, eFlipY). Then I export the tool and load it back in Poser, the morph works BUT the eyes are not in front of their sockets and the morph is clearly scaled (it is too big). I tried to change the scale value in the export: well impossible! the correct value seems to be between .9988 and .9987 !!

Finally I must say that the same operation with ZBrush2 runs well, no problem at all!! [so I’m, so far, disappointed with the upgrade:confused:]
I don’t know if this has something to do but in ZB2, in the preferences/exportimport there is an option “Unify scale” set to 4; that option is not present in ZB3 …

Does anybody encouter the same problem and does anybody know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

I’m getting a similar issue.

For me Zbrush 3 seems to offset the morphed head along the vertical axis rather than scale it.

I had some offsetting issues in the early stages of idcrisis2… I found that if I set the pivot to the origin before exporting to ZB it took care of it…

Hope that helps

Thanks but having looked more closely at this by exporting to Lightwave, I’ve found that this is indeed a scaling issue and not just an offset. As I’m importing a ZB’d head as a morph target back into Poser, I’m not sure I understand how the pivot point would affect this? Also, I don’t get this problem in ZB2.

On Sundy I investigated this problem with Poser morph targets. It seems that resulting zb3 .obj have to be scaled to 99.083% with 0,0,0 as action center. Well, at least in modo 2.03 it fitted almost perfect.

EDIT: 99.083 should be replaced with 99.0828. It’s a bit more exact number.

Same problem and after some quick testing it seems that its the OBJ exporter that’s broken. the DXF export seems to work fine… Need to do more tests though.

EDIT : Nevermind, the DXF ZB exports doesnt seem to be readable by any 3d app. and it doesnt preserve groups so it cant be used for poser anyway.

Also anyone know if you can access ZB mesh data through scripting or coding ? Till pixo get around to fixing the OBJ exporter, i may as well do my own exporting (if possible)

To get around the problem, after importing a model and dragging it onto the canvas, import it a second time. This will move the vertices to the model’s original scale and position.

Newbie question.

So objects from zBrush can be exported, then Poser can “re-attach” the new object to the original Poser file as a morph target? Is this what you’re saying?

thx

Kind off.
However, Poser cannot by itself handle morphs that span across multiple body parts. There are some third party tools available to help this though or you can use Daz Studio and its ‘Morph loader’ 3rd party plugin.

The new Zbrush 3.1 solves some problems with creating morph targets for poser figures from 3.0 i.e. the slight translation of the exported obj. However, I’ve found that if I save a morphed figure in ZB3.1, and then come back to this figure later. ZB seems to change something fundamental in the saved figure which is causing me problems when importing the obj as a morph target in Daz Studio.

Cool.

I also wondered about alignment of faces to be morphed. Is it necessary to concern yourself with “positioning” when creating the morph target in zbrush?

Hi all,
A similar, if not a more severe version of the problem with importing and exporting to and from Max8 SP3 from Zbrush 3.1.
I exported the lowest SUBD of my head model as an obj.
Imported that OBJ into my Max Scene…and without editing at all…exported it again.
In Zbrush, I then import the new max version of the OBJ. It seems to import and work fine,… until I go up a subD level, and it completly breaks, like the vert ordering is completly screwed. Does anyone else have this issue, and a solution to it?

Yorkar,

Was the link to the Poser Scaler in reference to my post about alignment of models (particularly 3d heads/faces)?

Thanks Yorkar. I’ll try it out.

EPhi,
All figures will work as described above but V4 is finicky. Any morphs I’ve tried to do for her wack out the back of her head.
So be prepared.

Anyone. could the Poser scaler importer be any faster?

I’m having a problem with exportilng two body parts (head and neck for example), altering in ZB3 and then importing, using grouping tool to separate them and export separately to be used with their respective body parts as morphs.

Note: Just got the answer over at Renderosity forum. Have to import each body part separately and then add to figure as Morph Target!

I do have a brief tutorial at my site which you might find helpful.

Also, I will have an extensive video tutorial being released around April which will cover all aspects of character morph creation, textures and displacement maps for use and distribution in Poser.
