trouble with primative 3d

I seem to be having this very fustrating problem with primative 3d objects.
I will explain my process ok i click a tool lets say a ring 3d and draw it out then try to sculpt on it and a message pops up saying it needs to be a poly mesh 3d so i click poly mesh 3d but nothing happens. Why i dont know but this also has an effect when i try to let say add an earring to a main subtool and append the earring to it but when i try to move or scale it it moves the main subtool aka the head plz help this is driving me nuts i cant move forward until i figure this out!!

First question: Which version of ZBrush are you running?

version 3.5r2
