Trouble rendering SSS and fibers

Hello,

I am having trouble figuring out how to render both SSS on a character at the same time as rending fibers for hair. I have loaded the demo project SSS zstartup which I read is how to get the SSS material. I then load my sculpt and change material over to the SSS material. When I do that, it seems to apply to all my subtools. I select my character, change to the material attribute and select fill color which normally makes the material stay on the selected subtool. However I notice if I change subtools and choose a different material, it applies to my figure as well. If I leave it on the SSS material, and then try to do a BPR render (with SSS and fibers both enabled in render pallette) The skin will render with SSS material but the hair comes out all frizzy looking. If I render the figure without loading up the project for SSS, the hair renders fine. Is there a trick getting this to work? I thought about rendering out the figure separately from the hair, but I wouldnt be able to get the correct alpha for the hair as there would be nothing blocking out where the head should be. I know it could be done in lightwave by making the figure invisible to the camera, but I would rather do it in Zbrush as I think it looks better when rendered in zbrush.

Thank you,

First picture is how hair looks before being rendered. Second picture is what is happening when I render using SSS after loading that demo project to get the material.

When you fill with material are you turning on the M button? Also, when rendering SSS you need to turn it on for the lights in the Light palette - it will not work with MatCaps/LightCaps.

Hi,

Yes, when I am filling the subtool I press M in the palette before pressing the fill color (which is set to 100%), but it doesnt seem to stay. Im not sure what would cause that, I didnt know if it was something in that demo project for SSS causing it to happen. I know there are at least 2 lights in the scene that are active, they are setup from that project. Is it possible to get the SSS material and not have to load that demo project? Thank you!

You can use the SubTool Master > Fill option to fill the visible subtools with a material. That might simplify things.

I can’t think that the demo SSS project would be causing a problem but you can save out the material (it’s called ZSkin01) and then load it into a new project. If you save it to the ZStartup/Materials folder it will be available each time you start ZBrush. Remember that materials have ‘slots’ and when you load a material it replaces the selected material. If this happens to be the same as a material you’ve embedded in some subtools it can be confusing. So choose an unused material before loading a new one so you can keep a track on what’s happening.

HTH,

You will also need to turn on SSS for a light in the Light palette and make sure it is also on in the Render > Render Properties.
