Trouble importing OBJ from Maya

Hello,

I just started using ZBrush (literally this morning) and I am experiencing some weirdness when trying to import a model from Maya.

I started off in Maya with a model of a cortex (left), then I fattened up the gyrii (right) and finally I saved the whole thing as an OBJ file and brought it into ZBrush and everything looked ok. Then I went back into Maya and deleted the original cortex which I didn’t need any more, but when I tried to bring in only the fattened cortex, it looked like this:

As you can see, there’s this weird interpenetrating geometry that I have no idea where it’s coming from. I first tried deleting the unneeded cortex within the Maya file and then exporting only the fattened cortex as an OBJ, and then I tried importing the working OBJ file with both cortexes, deleting the unneeded cortex and re-exporting only the fattened cortex as an OBJ, but in both situations I got this same weirdness.

Does anyone know what’s going on? Or, barring that, how do I delete the unneeded cortex within ZBrush?

your normals are flipped.
tool>display panel>flip

to delete it in Zbrush you need to have subtools. If the two object are in the same subtool and are totally different objects
tool>polygroups>auto groups
tool>subtool>grp split
then delete the un needed subtool.

If you don’t know about subtools the Zclassroom on pixologic’s site has some good vids that will get you started.
