Tribute to Ron Mueck

Hi there!

It´s quite a while ago that I posted something here. I´ve always been a fan of Ron Muecks great sculptures and so I decided to give it a try, and do a recreation of one of his works. My goal isn´t really to create a 1:1 likeness, but something close to the original. I use zbrush and mudbox for sculpting and texturing, and Vray for the rendering. Lot´s of work still to do, but here are my first WIPs. The eyes are very basic for now. I will work on the textures and shading later, but I want to get the sculpting done next For the eyebrows and hair I will eventually try hair farm, as it seems to be an easy to use and fast hair renderer. Well, that´s it for now. I hope you like it so far and I will post some updates soon.

fantastic work, love the expression! :+1:

Good start. The Vray-skin can have some finetuning I think. The sss looks too strong in the folds of the skin.

Vray’s SSS2 with Vray engine is rock :+1:

Looks great, i have been trying to understand sss 2 shader but i did not have much success. Can you share your shader setup?
Thanks,
Toni.

Love the sss shot!

wow! That is really inspiring!

Thanks guys. Glad you like it so far.

Yeah the sss2 in vray is really nice. But it needs some time to get it work.
The render doesn´t look as good is could be, I´ll need to tweak a lot more.
The settings are very close to the default skin preset, the biggest difference is in the color slots, which is the most difficult part to figure these out.

Also I think I will get a much better result, once I have more detail in the model and more variation in color, spec and bump. The maps are very very basic at the moment.I just use a overall color and sub surface color map for now. So I think there is a lot of room for improvements.

I can post a screenshot of the settings later.

Great sculpt and expression. The skin wrinkles are dead on. Also, the render is fantastic. It doesn’t feel too soft to me mostly since it’s somewhat stylized already. Can’t wait to see the rest!

I can’t believe the anti-Mac forum Nazi’s allow you to post something that was done in Mudbox.

ace. love it

Very nice model and skin shader!:+1:

hey grugi!

beautiful work. really like the render.
looking forward for more from you.

Thanks

A couple of new shading/lighting tests.

I think the hi specular version has too much spec, and the other is too low.
But once I have a specular map I can have a little bit of both versions.
Since this model is a mask, I don´t aim for a 100% real skin look, more of a silicon look which is painted to make it look like skin.

cool sculpt and shading! i’m starting too with the vray sss2 any info, tips or settings you used would be very usefull.

excellent!
i immediately recognise the inspiration of ron mueck, i saw an exposition
of his works 2 years ago, it’s really good job

great work! nice shaders

congrats

Thanks for the nice words. I will post a little bit of the workflow later.

Here is another lighting test. The idea is to have that mask hanging on a wall. The way you can see Ron´s sculpture in a museum ;) ;) I just don´t like, that the diffuse light, bouncing off the white walls are killing all the specular hilights. So I need to figure out a better light setting for a situation like that. [

I guess you dont know how many time spends mental ray’s fast sss skin compare with vray engine

Comebacks in broken english, priceless. I’m kidding

Grugi: I think your right, the GI is really washing out your acute detailing. Maybe just try lower the intensity of your light to get less bounce, and/or two lights on either side of your model. It’s looking great, gj:+1:
