Trial Install Error

Hullo,
I just signed up to the trial version of zBrush 4, downloaded the file. Clicked to install it… …it does its thing… …then a little box pops up telling me:

zBrush 4 Trial - InstallShield Wizard
1152: Error extracting
C:\Users\Tailz\AppData\Local\Temp{46384AC3-4 Trial.msi to the temporary location

I’m running a brand new install of Windows 7 Pro.

What could be going wrong?

Does your computer have a C drive? If not, see here: https://support.pixologic.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=58

Are you logged into the computer under an administrator account? If not, you’ll need to switch to an admin account to install ZBrush.

If neither of the above apply, you most likely simply have a bad download. In that case, just click the link in the confirmation email again. It’ll take you directly to the download page. To be on the safe side, I would recommend disabling your antivirus software before downloading. Some such programs can corrupt an executable when it downloads.

Hum… ok, first up, this computer has only one user account which is the administrator account. The computer has a drive C, which is the main drive.

I tried setting the file’s Privilege level as “Run this program as an administrator” and got the same problem.

This computer is running Windows 7 64bit… will that cause a problem?

No, that won’t cause a problem.

Have you tried downloading it again? You didn’t say.

Try disabling your antivirus software before downloading as some such apps can mess up downloaded files. Make sure it’s disabled before installing, too. Antivirus software is designed to interfere with stuff being downloaded from the internet and installed on your machine. It’s not always accurate at figuring out what to allow and what not to.

If you still get this error then something is odd about the permissions on your system. You might be able to resolve it by right clicking on the C:\Users\Tailz\AppData\Local\Temp\ folder and manually setting the permissions to Read & Write.

I did the install using the same file I had downloaded from before. I just downloaded the file again - with Kaspersky turned off - and I attempted the install with it also turned off. This time I got a message: Application Corrupt.

Deleted that file and downloaded it again.

Attempted to install again. Got past the unpacking phase and to the actual installer this time. Then got a zBrush 4 Trial Error that said:

Error 1335. The cabinet file ‘Data1.cab’ required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.

I clicked on the retry button. Got same message, clicked ignore. Got a message: Error 2350.FDI server error. Clicked abort.

I’ve been doing some research and there are three things that can cause that error:

  1. A corrupted download. You’ve said that you have disabled your computer’s antivirus, but is your computer on a company network? If so, it’s possible that their IT manager has configured the network with additional security and this is causing the problem.

  2. A corrupted installation of Windows Installer. You might try reinstalling Windows Installer. See here

  3. Faulty RAM. If one of your RAM modules is going bad, it can cause this sort of problem. You should run MemTest86 or another diagnostic program to test. Run a complete test, and for best results run the test through three complete passes.

Also, please be sure your user account on the computer is an administrator. ZBrush must be installed by an administrator.

Well I seem to have solved the problem. I turned the User Account Control (UAC) off and it installed without a hitch.

I did check the ram tho, no problems found. Plus the link to the windows installer you gave didn’t have any updates for Windows 7, just updates for previous Windows versions.
