transparency when retopologizing

When I retopologize, existing surfaces and new vertices on the opposite face are still visible. Thicker regions in the object aren’t as transparent. So obviously there is a setting somewhere to control the transparency. I don’t want this transparency because it causes opposite vertices to be picked by accident. Where can I change this transparency setting? Is this behavior described in the documentation?

I find the ZBrush doc really sketchy in general. Yes there is a lot of info in the forum and YouTube. But one has to wade through tons of irrelevant material, including stuff that’s not even related to ZBrush. I understand it’s hard to write good comprehensive documentation, but with the Wiki structure I would think it’s easy for the support staff or gurus to update the doc whenever a poor novice like me points out how difficult it is for us to find info for certain topics.

I don’t believe there is a setting for this. The best I’ve been able to do is:

  • use the smallest brush size I can get away with to avoid accidentally grabbing unwanted points

  • use the FlatColor material, it tends to show off the retopo cage very well

  • if backfacing points are visible in a thin area I’m trying to work in, enable Local Transformations and rotate to a view where I can grab the desired point without affecting the backfacing

A friend of mine showed me a tutorial about retopoloy, and in it the model looked solid. I think it was by Eat3D. We couldn’t figure out what setings he had to enable it though. I’m still trying to figure it out.

It was ZBrush 3. By default you can easily grab can’t grab backfacing vertices. For some reason they changed that for ZBrush 4.

Can we make a formal request to Pixelogic to change it back, or at least to give the option of hiding backfaces?

I am facing the same problems its really hard to retopologize this way if only there was a bacfacing switch…

Yes, I have to say, I’ve gone back to 3.5 for retopologizing. Luckily, I still had the installer on my computer, and they are (were) still allowing installation at the time.

Has anyone from Pixologic acknowledged this issue?

Does anyone think that the new system is better? If so, can you explain what the benefits are, and why they changed it?
