Transparency issue. Hopefully it's fixed soon.

The active tool is transparent only when behind the other object..

If you really feel that way then I would suggest adding it to the Z4 Wishlist, and using a polite, constructive tone.

Hmm… of course I feel that way. Anyway that smiley face I added is just a harmless little… smiley face.

Anyway, I just don’t get why they had it right in Z3.1 and now it’s broken. I mean what’s the point of the active tool not being transparent when it’s in front of an imageplane? Just makes no sense.

I really hope this is something that gets fixed soon. It’s gotta be extremely simple. I don’t think there’s a need to wait for Z4 to get it right again.

I have a feeling it will be fixed in Z4.

I’m also surprised with the change in the way transparency works. While having an image plane behind my model, I’m no longer able to sculpt my model without my model obscuring the reference image. Now that being said, it is a nice feature to be able to make all other subtools transparent while working on your active subtool. By any chance, is there a toggle that will ‘reverse’ the transparency (i.e. make the active subtool transparent)? Or is there a workaround available to allow sculpting using reference image planes in v3.5? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tool>Preferences>Draw>Ghost

Turning it off returns ZBrush to the behavior from 3.1

aurick do you mean in the specific action he is describing because turning that off does not make normal subtool transparency back like 3.1.

Hi Aurick, thank you for the reply. I turned off ‘Ghost Clear Transparency’ and that changed the transparent objects to retain their color and shading similar to v3.1. I learn something new everyday  Unfortunately that didn’t address my issue. I was hoping there is a way to make the active subtool transparent which will allow me to see the reference image.

In the meantime, I have been moving my model from v3.1 to 3.5r2 which I do not mind. That brings up a question… I cam move my model from 3.5 back to 3.1 by exporting the highest and lowest subdivision levels as a .obj file, but is there a way to retain the color information in the process? Thanks again for the help.

EDIT: I’d like to adhere to standard practices of this forum… So please let me know if it’s more appropriate to put the question about the color in a seperate thread.

Hi, Im having the same trouble: can’t get the object transparent so there’s NO POINT in having an image plane. Did you find a workaround?

I just can’t believe they let pass a flaw that big - client wise, referencing is a must, isn’t it?. So I’d rather assume I’m the dumb one and wait for wise advice to prove my inability to cope with simple requirements

Hi Simoon, I have not found a work-around other than to bring the model back into v3.1.

I must admit, I am seeing the benefit of the way v3.5 handles transparency. But it does seem like the negative effect of changing that functionality was under-estimated. You brought up a good point, it defeat part of the reason for having image planes (although they are useful for other purposes). I think it would be a fantastic feature to have a button to toggle between having the active subtool transparent, and having all non-active subtools transparent. If there is no post in the Wishlist section, I will have put one up.
