Transferring detail from one mesh to another unlike mesh

Hi, First time posting. I would appreciate any direction with this topic. What I’m trying to do is project sculpted detail from one mesh to another completely different topoolgy mesh. IE, say you had a sculpted rock wall that was planar in nature and you wanted to project that detail onto a sphere…just for simplicity sake.

So far I’ve tried “moving” my old mesh around to conform better to the new mesh and then using the project brush in conjunction with a stored morph target. This works ok but its hard to conform the general contours of my old mesh to that of the new unlike mesh. Two totally different volumes, and I want to mostly keep the contours of the new mesh.

I cant really do a projection method due to the above mentioned two meshes being unlike.

In a perfect world what I would like to do is capture a depth map of a masked selection from the detailed sculpt I’m looking to copy from and then be able to apply that displacement to the new mesh in an intuitive manner.

Note that the two meshes would contain completely different uv sets if they had any at all. IE I don’t know if capturing a displacement map would work unless I could some how do that in a completely planar uv space?

Any help would be appreciated.
