traditional to digital frustration

Hi everyone.

I am very interested in getting into 3D, but I have one big problem.
I´m used to working with clay and I find it really hard to translate those experiences into a 3D app.

I realize that I probably will get used to it with practice, but maybe someone has some pointers as how to smoothen the transition.

I particularly have problems with turning surfaces, such as the lips. I mean I know the planes, but somehow I get confused when I don´t have my hands on a physical sculpture.

I´m grateful for any thoughts on this subject, but if you feel this post is in the wrong place (or just a waste of space) - oh that rhymed - feel free to nuke it.

Been here for a while and I am in awe of what you guys can create. I have learned alot about 3d here, I guess I´ve just been slightly afraid to actually get my hands dirty…so I´ve…uhm…gotten my hands dirty from clay instead…yeah that´s logical.

Thank you.

As someone who has up to now made things of clay, foam, wood, and stuff like that, I want you to know that you are not alone. I feel there is no actual tactile analog here, and believe me, I’m missing it, but from my limited experience with this program so far, It is pretty good at fooling the eye into thinking that at least perceptually, you are working with depth. Sometimes it almost feels like I’m using a rake instead of a pen tablet.

Have you played much with the inflate brush turned down low?

You just have really dig and try to learn what works and doesn’t work, trial and error. Learn how each tool works and know them well that way your work will go seamless and you don’t have to worry about anything else but your artwork. Also watching video tutorials might help like say maybe Gnomon or Digital Tutors just to name a few and it might ease the burden of trying to figure out stuff for yourself. Try Googling stuff too on the net and see what you can find about anything related to 3D, there are tons of stuff on the net.

I know that it gets frustrating because I have worked with 3D for 5 years now especially 3D and I still get frustrated now and then (sometimes I curse at my computer for not working the I want it to). “It is not the tools that make the artist but rather what the artist does with his tools in order to make great art.” Hope this helps and good luck.
