Topology Painting Crash In Zbrush 3.12 :(

hello guys

well i am new to zbrush and i must say zbrush is the most fun app. i have ever come across , great to be here :slight_smile:
now to the prob. at hand:

zbrush 3.12 crashes when i try to paint topology on a model that has
19,749 ACTIVE POINTS at SUBDIV 2, ( all quads )
i also tried to paint topology on the same tool at SUBDIV 1 with 5,091 ACTIVE POINTS, again zbrush crashes !
I following the instructions from Topology & Flow Lab btw.

i also tried to edit existing topology and zbrush crashes as well
i folowed this instructions:

Editing existing topology
Load the model you want to edit
Select a new ZSphere tool.
Clone your model.
Make sure that the subdiv level of the cloned model is at 1 or 2 (If you don’t, it doesn’t work! The original model can have as high subdiv levels as you like)
In the Tool:Rigging subpalette, select the original model, and activate (optional) the Projection Mode, so that the model which will be generated is projected on the Template.
In the Tool:Topology subpalette, select the cloned model. All the lines will show up.
Enter the Edit Topology Mode.

fresh INSTALLED ZBRUSH 3.12 WITH NO PLUGZ

one more thing that i can’t seem to figure out;

i am not abel to SCALE & MOVE the canvas, the scale button only scales the tool
so is there a way to scale and move the canvas ?

thank you for your time and many thanks in advance for helping out
have a merry Christmas and a happy new year ! :smiley:

Scale the canvas through the Document menu tab along the top row of options, 4th from the left, open it and uncheck the “pro” button and adjust to suite, you can adjust the colors in this menu tab also. I have no idea about your other issues, good luck.

thanks puzzle for trying to help

but i know about " resize " the document already, what i am asking is how can “ZOOM” & “MOVE” the document in & out on the fly via some keyboard shortcut and not RESIZE the actual pixel count :smiley:

ps: i know also about using the scale button to scale up the tool but this only scales the tool and not the actual canvas :cry:

To zoom in and out of the canvas, use the + and - keys. To return to 100% magnification, press 0.

This will pixelate the edges when you zoom in, just like if you’re magnifying in photoshop.

thank you aurick for helping out :slight_smile:

however i am still searching for a solution in regards to zbrush 3.12 crashing when i try to paint topology or just edit existing topology

i would like to know if this is a bug with zbrush 3.12, for i have been following to the letter the instructions from topo. & flowlab with no success ?

thank you for your time

ps: merry christmas and a happy new year to you and to all at zcentral ! :lol:

hello every body

i would like to know from my fellow mac comrades what are the " bugs " that are currently know in zbrush 3.12

so i don’t waste my time trying to solve an issue that is unsolvable at this time

and if anyone knows how i can solve my prob. i would appreciate if you could let me know :smiley:

Thanks again for taking the time !

I’m not aware of any problems with retopology in 3.12. Could you provide steps that consistently duplicate the problem? Then we’ll be able to investigate for you.

To edit existing topology try this:

Clone your model.
Delete all levels in the clone but the level you want to become your starting Topology
(Optional) Save the clone
Rig your model to a Zsphere as normal
Select the clone as the topolgy in the Topology subpallet.
Set up projection as needed
Hit Edit Topology

This should let you edit the topology of you model of your starting with your chosen topology. I have not had much success pulling in a multilevel model as the starting topology, so it’s better to prep a clone with just 1 level. If there is topology you know you’re going to re-do, you can go ahead and delete those points in advance.

As for bugs, there are problems with adaptive skins (which are used to remake the new surface after editing topology) and places where more than 5 edges meet. It will look as if part of your model are turning inside out and other goofiness. No good cures at this time except to re-build topology so that intersections don’t exceed 5 edges.

thanks again aurick, much appreciate that you are taking the time during the holidays to help me out :slight_smile:

PS:to make this troubleshoot easier i replaced my model with a PM3D sphere to make sure it wasn’t a problem related to my mesh, however zbrush still crashes :frowning:

below are the steps that i did for Topology Painting:

1st) load a poly sphere
make polymesh3d
(left at default)

2nd) i get a PM3D SPHERE 3d
polys= 8192
points= 8320
subdiv =0

3rd) load a ZSPHERE

4th) RIGGING
select mesh
i select the pm3d sphere that i just made

5th) TOPOLOGY
edit topology

6TH ) CRASH
brush some size and press Shift-LMB-click while painting over the reference mesh. zbrush crashes in less then 5 seconds

  • i also tried to reduce the poly count when i achieved no result with the default poly count as stated above by clicking on
    “RECONSTRUCT SUBDIV”, i got the following :
    polys= 2048
    points=2112

    *still zbrush crashes without hesitation

my MBP has 4 gb of ram this are the mem. settings in the peference menu that i selected:
compact mem= 3150
doc undo= 4
tool undo= 4
max polyper mesh = 18.281250
hd preview maxpoly 6.093750

The shift-lmb painting (step 6) has never worked for me on ZB 3.12 on any of my macs . . .

sorry kerwin, i only saw your post afterwards :slight_smile:

its good to know i am not the only one having problems with this…

if zbrush crashes with a simple default PM3d sphere, on a newly installed copy of zbrush 3.12 i dont know what else it could be other than a bug
the last test i did the pm3d sphere had only 2048 polys ! :cry:

THe shift-lmb paint wasn’t originally a documented feature. :smiley: It was discovered and documented by others with ZB 3 and ZB 3.1. Apparently something in 3.12 broke this experimental feature. The workaround I documented above is a pretty easy way of selecting part of your mesh as the basis for retopologizing (is that even a word?) that seems to work in all versions of ZB3.x within the edge limitation for adaptive skins, I noted. :slight_smile:

hi Kerwin :slight_smile:

i tried your method but unfortunately a no go for me:(
i tried with a pm3d sphere and when i load the clone mesh ( with only one subdiv) i do not see the topology lines when i click " edit topology "
i tried all kinds of poly count, from the very low res to high res ( 1000 to 1.5 million range) same goes for the subdiv from 1 to 5 nothing worked !

the only thing that seems to work is to build topology from scratch :frowning:

ps: just out of curiosity, when you run zbrush 3.12 , how hot does your mac get ?

my mbp gets as high as 109 C with high poly count

Weird. I just tried it on an 8198 pt sphere with a same size mesh on my MBP (4GB Ram). Very carefully, try this just as a test:

  • Start with a “Sphere 3D” in the tools menu with the defaults (Hdivide 128, Vdivide 65)
  • Hit “Make Polymesh3D”. This will give you a PM3D_Sphere3D object.
  • Select a Single Zsphere from the tools menu
  • Select Edit
  • In the Rigging submenu, hit “Select Mesh” and select the PM3D_Spehere3D object
  • Hit “Bind Mesh” in the Rigging sumenu
  • In the Topology menu, hit “Select Topo” and select the PM3D_Sphere3D mesh again
  • Hit “Edit Topology”

Let me know what you get . . . (I’m trying to diagnose whether there is something weird in your setup or whether you’ve hit upon something else weird.)

I get something like the attached screenshot

ZB will cause your macbook to work. I have mine sitting on a plate with a fan in it, just to keep mine cool when I’m at home. :smiley:

worked ok… but i then tried to divide to subdiv 1 , did not work :frowning:

Ah, I see. Why are you trying to subdivide after starting your re-topology?

I don’t normally do this when I’m editing topology. :confused:

-K

no, i meant was that after i was successful following as you instructed, i tried to divide to subdiv 1 before i retopo ( the 2nd time around )
. just to see if it would work at a higher poly count… i did no try to subdiv while i was retopo the 1st time around :slight_smile:

Ah, I get it. My best recommendation is to keep your level ones to only 1k to 2k polygons when manually retopo’ing (mine are even more frequently lighter weight.) If you don’t find they hold the detail on exporting, use level 2 or 3 as your base mesh in your external program (like C4D or Maya). I’ll think that you’ll find things work easier with lighter weight level 1’s. (I know that ZB will often blow up on me if my level one in retopo is over 10K polys.)

Attached are examples of a sketch I was workin on the other day which is about 500K polys at level 6 and about 516 polys at level 1.

thanks again k

yeah the thing is my tool subdiv 1 = 5091 plys, subdiv 2= 19,749, subdiv 3 = 77,796

i need at least level 2, ideal is level 3… but the prob is that can’t do none of them, the only thing i managed to retopo existing was the the basic low poly pm3d sphere :frowning:

iam gonna sleep now talk to u later :slight_smile:

thanks again m8

If you don’t have any triangles in your current level 1, you might try reconstruct subdivs to get anew level 1 at a more manageable weight for retopo. Otherwise, you might want to try Silo (http://www.nevercenter.com/ – on sale to the end of the year) for heavier retopo work. You can then use the “Project All” feature of the subtool pallet to transfer your details to a Silo-edited base mesh.

Merry Christmas and Best Wishes,
