癫狂的海盗船长

Hi everyone,

This is my latest artwork: a manic Pirate Captain.

For this project, I relied heavily on ZBrush for the entire modeling workflow. This included blocking out the primary volumes, pushing the dynamic tension of the pose, refining the anatomical structures, sculpting the twist and flow of the hair, and pushing the high-poly details all the way down to the micro skin pores. Texturing was done in Substance Painter, and I used Marmoset Toolbag for the final renders, where I experimented with various environmental moods and lighting setups.

The most challenging yet rewarding aspects of this project were:

  • Dynamic Sculpting: I spent a lot of time constantly tweaking the pose and applying targeted exaggeration to convey his arrogant, unhinged personality. For the head sculpt, it was a constant balancing act between pushing the exaggeration of his facial features for dramatic tension and maintaining believable anatomical realism.
  • Cinematic Lighting & Rendering: To achieve lighting that is both realistic and dramatic—highlighting his dangerous traits—I avoided using traditional manual fill lights for the dark areas. Instead, I used mood-specific HDRIs to naturally lift the shadows. I then manually simulated environmental lights, like firelight and sunsets, to ground the character in the scene. Finally, I adjusted focal lengths, depth of field, and aperture settings for different shot compositions to replicate a true cinematic camera lens.

A huge thank you to the instructors at Yousu Academy and Dongge for their endless patience and guidance. I hope you all like it!
