Tools missing HD geometry in 4R4 (answered)

I installed and activated the new version of Zbrush last night (4R4) and I’m loving the new functions. I have one pretty big problem though:

Every single tool that had HD geometry in it is now missing those HD subdivision levels. I noticed it first on my current project, an Warhammer Ork. It’s main body was made up of 6 regular subdivisions bringing it up to roughly 1.6M polygons, and then another two HD subdivisions taking it up to a total of 22M polys. I had quite a lot of detail sculpted into the HD geometry, and when I loaded the tool up in 4R4 that detail was gone and the tool is sitting at 1.6M polys and no HD divisions.

I have loaded up every tool I’ve created using HD geometry, and they are ALL missing their HD divisions. It’s just gone.

Anyone else having this problem? It’s a pretty big issue for me, seeing how I lost many hours of sculpting that now needs to be remade.

I can confirm that this does happen with both .ztl and .zpr files from zb4r3 to zb4r4. All HD levels are gone.

I would suggest just using zb4r3 until they put out a fix for you Johnny.

I’ve reported this to the development team so that they can investigate. Thanks.

Hi:)

Z4R4 includes a slight file format change in order to allow users to transfer HD geometry between Windows and Macintosh systems.

However, it seems that this may cause incompatibility problems reading the some of the ‘older’ HD geometry formats. This will be fixed promptly and if all goes as expected, we will issue a correction patch by the end of the day. I’ll reply to this thread when the patch is ready.

Meanwhile, don’t allow this small hiccup to take away from your enjoyment of Z4R4:)

Wow! Thanks for the quick answers.

Glad to know I’m not the only one, and even glader that a fix is in the works. And don’t worry, I’m not letting a small bump get in the way of enjoying the new version, it’s absolutely great! In fact, before I saw these answers I had decided that this was a superb opportunity to try out the ne Qremesher on the ork’s main body.

Thanks again, and happy sculpting out there.

Hi:)

The patch is ready.

Instructions…

  1. Launch ZBrush 4R4
  2. Click the “Check New Updates” from the “ZPlugin/Auto Update” subpalette and select to update ZBrush.

Note: This is only required if you are using the windows version and have older ZBrush projects and tools containing HD geometry data. The Macintosh version does not require this patch.

Have fun ZBrushing:)

Thanks again for the speedy update, as always, Pixologic delivers.

I’ve patched 4R4 and tried it, and it works. However, as a warning to others, I’d like to point out that if you’ve made any changes to the affected subtool in 4R4, it seems the HD divisions will NOT be mended by this patch. Luckily, I always keep several save files of each tool, so I have unedited versions of the Ork.

All the tools that I have not edited in 4R4 had their HD geometry restored though.
