"Tool:SubTool:ProjectAll" gives a different result time

Here’s a little problem I’m having with the function “Tool:SubTool:ProjectAll”: It gives a different result each time, that is, it behaves non-deterministically, so to speak.

I wonder if it’s a bug or a feature.

To reproduce the problem:

  • Create two sub tools: a cylinder, and a lengthy cube. Arrange them like shown in the screenshot and the YouTube video. (The exact arrangement may not actually matter, though.)
  • Set up the ProjectAll parameters like shown. (Again, it doesn’t necessarily matter.)
  • Click ProjectAll, Undo, ProjectAll, Undo, ProjectAll…

Here’s a video:

The projection results you get will be skewed in a different way each time.

This makes the function unpredictable and rather useless for some purposes.

I tried your test on both Mac OSX and Windows and the Project All function behaved exactly as expected without any difference when undoing and repeating. Could you please zip and post the ZTL you are using so I can take a look? If you save out through the Tool palette it should be well below the forum maximum file size.

Thanks,

This is my ZPR file (and I just confirmed that it still reproduces the problem after restarting ZBrush
Feel free to post your test project as well.

Thanks for your effort!

Well, your project behaved as expected on Windows - no difference after undoing and no odd deformation. I haven’t had time to test on Mac OSX yet.

I’ve attached the ZTL I used for my tests.

Your model demonstrates the problem even better. Thanks Marcus.

I’ll file a report. This is a bug in the MacOS X version of ZBrush 4R5.

And I think there are more. My versions of ZBrush (4R4 and 4R5) show some bad behaviors that make working with them difficult and frustrating.
I’m spending quite some time documenting bugs, and I get the feeling that I’m quite unfortunate to have bought the Mac version.
