tool loading problem

hi,
I have a serious problem. My model is 870 000 polys big.Saving and loading as tool works perfectly. When I divide it to 3 500 000 polys and save it as a tool, everytime I want to load that tool again z-brush gives me an error warning(see pic)why? A days work would be lost if I cant manage to load it in again!hope somebody could help me…
thx mick

Rule number one…always save your model at it’s lowest subdivision. Saves both heartache and hard drive space.
Don’t worry all the subd’s will still be there.

Imagine you open a 1500 page programming manual and trying to understand it all at once as fast as your boss wants you to understand it but only faster. You are gonna tell him he’s friggen nuts aren’t ya? Well that’s what your computer is trying to do when it tries to open a model with a gazillion polys (and all that subd info if a .ztl) and guess what it’s tellin ya?

check out Svengali’s Psnap plugin…it will allow you to quickly save out your models with one click of a button at their lowest subd level, and you’ll always be able to reload it without thinking about it too much.

hi ,
Thx for you answer! The funny thing is, I saved it on level one :frowning:
Also when you load the tool with 500 000 p , subdivide it , and save it as a tool on level one, you get the same message next time you want to load it. You can subdivide it, work with it(I sculpted a whole day), but you cant save it…

What are your system specs?

hmmm it should load fine if you are saving it for sure on level 1 as a ztl.

I wonder if you don’t have a stray vert or something in that model ya might not know ya have.

try saving some other models the same way and see if ya still have problems. Make sure they are ones you for sure know don’t have any problems.

windows xp prof, 4gig ram, dual opteron 248, 17 gig free space on C.
I think you re right, there has to be a problem with the mesh :frowning:
I exported the model ,level one, as an obj, and generated a displacement-map , d-subpix 4. I imported that obj and reassigned the displacement_map.
Now its no problem to subdivide it again, and save/load it as a tool.Think I have to start again from there :frowning:
Thx for you help
Mick

Hope it can be fixed, lost 5-6 hours work just now

There won’t be a way to salvage the model. Once corrupted, that’s it. Always, ALWAYS remember to save the model at level 1; not at the highest level. All details will still be saved, but the file will be smaller and won’t risk corruption.

Yup, lesson learned. Thank you for helping though, I appreciante all you helping

Encountered this problem once again,
Saved in Level 1, hours lost.

A bug like this should have vital fix-priority number 1.

I never faced this problem in last 6 months using zbrush.

In the beginning used to save tool at highest level :o ( now days at low level  ) still never got this problem.

Its quite possible hardisk might be having a problem - just a guess- defrag and scan disk it that might help.

Thanks for helping out WSunny,

You might be right about the HD problem, but I don’t think that that is the problem right now as I haven’t had problems with any other files.

The problem seem to be that ZB can’t store huge files, it bugs when hitting a 100 MB limit or so, either that, or problem could be related to a dense mesh. Just a theory, saving a less detailed version seems to work for now.

Thanks again
