Tool has turned grey???

Strange one here. The mesh I’m working on now has somhow turned grey. There is no texture on it. Its not colorized. Changiing the material doesnt affect it either. The material changes but its still a dark grey. When I mask over it nothing shows up on the screen, but the small tool icon does show the mask. Clearing the mask doesnt help. Polygroups dont show up in color but they are still there and are selectable. I’ve been using Zbrush for a few years now so this seems kind of weird to me. Only happnes with this one mesh too. If I load the older version in from a few days ago it comes up white and works normally so it seems I bumped a button and its now saved that way. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Did you turn off the Texture?

there is no texture on it. Actually you cant put a texture on it. Nothing shows up.
Also, when not in edit mode, there is no perspective distortion either. No matter what the settings are it still has no perspective.

weird.

Could be the model unintentionally masked?
Have you tried to clear the masking?

can you post a screenshot?

No Its not masked. The mask doesnt show up on the mesh when I use it. It does show up on the Icon of the mesh. And it does affect the ability to sculpt, so its there just not visible at all. It doesnt change at all if viewmask is pressed or not.
Ive attached 2 screenshots, one of the grey figure I’m working on and one of the standard zbrush figure from the website. Both loaded into the same document so you can see the color difference. You can also see the mask on the small icon of my figure

I said masking because appened to me (and I have lost an half day!!!)
I’m sorry, but I hope that someone more experienced can help you beacause you are doing a very nice work!

Check the material applied to your model (click+drag from the material icon to your model). You most likely have a Colorizer shader in one of the shader channels. Enable MultiplyMode in the Colorizer shader to view your masks, wireframes and textures.

Since changing materials did not help I would guess you have filled the model with a material. Disabling Tool > Texture > Colorize will solve that.

Well that was my shot at it. With any luck your problem should keep us occupied until the 15th

it’s smt. about the material, I guess. but…

First, thanks for the help everyone. This is driving me crazy!
Second, even with the flat shader I get grey. If I load the texture in for this mesh it doesnt show up at all either. Other Tools I load in work fine, just not this one which I’ve been working on for a few weeks now.
ARGHHHH!

Have you tryed to export the model as an .obj, reimport and reconstruct lower subdivision level? (just to no lose the work)

Can you grab a screen-shot of your lights? You might have clicked on the main light and put it behind the object. The default second light will produce hi-lights, but won’t illuminate the model much.

Here’s the light setup. Its just the default lights.

Ok, that’s not it. What version of ZB are you running? I can’t quite make out the version (top left of the window). Mine is 2.0 … just wondering if this is an issue relating to 64 bit or something.

Try the following and see if this gives you back control. Load your tool then clear your screen, select white as your colour, the flat shader as your material, hit the Texture thumbnail in the left toolbar and select Fill Layer. You should get a pure white screen. If not, have you got more than one layer? If it is pure white, hit the texture button again and select Grab Doc. The texture thumb should now be pure white too.

Go back to the Tool palette, select your guy and draw him on screen. He should be invisible, because he should be wearing the same texture as the background (pure white). Hit Edit and Ctrl+N … just the guy should remain, in pure white. Probably a good idea to save a copy of him at this stage, including as an obj.

If that didn’t help, have you got Fog turned on in the Render palette? Have you UV mapped him? Are you using a tablet and pen (I have a cheap Wacom and sometimes, on higher density meshes, any brush stroke turns models dark grey, though that usually clears as soon as I move the model). Are your drivers up to date?

Im running Zbrush2.0r2 on a 64bit vista system, 4gb ram. I tried all the steps you recommended and everything worked as you said until the CRTL-N when the white screen disappeared but the figure is now invisible. Its there as you can see in the screenshot the symmetry shows on the cursor but I just cant see anything.
Fog is off. He is UV mapped and I am using a Wacom intous3 with the newest drivers. The strange part is that I can put two tools on screen and this one is grey, the othere all come up white or textured and work fine. This mesh is only 900,000 polys right now so it shouldnt be too much of a problem.
Thanks again!

Check if it can be this:

You’re my new favorite person. That solved it. Strange problem. Next time I’m in Genova I’ll take you out for dinner! Thanks again. Now I can get back to work.

I wish I’d noticed this thread when you first posted it…I had the exact same problem a couple of weeks ago and nearly drove myself nuts trying to figure it out. I finally did get it, but it was frustrating. If I’d seen your thread, I would have spoke up.

Wish guti had been there 2 weeks ago!
