Hold down CTRL while mousing over the buton for additional tooltip help.
If I recall, toggling SMT on results in blending across face angles upon subdividing. Turning it off will result in subdivided the faces, but retain the original face angle relationships.

It’s a really nice and usefull tool and i dont want to miss that thing.
It’s something like the Edge Loop function.

This is something I’m looking for as well. I used it to make the hair in ZBrush 2.0 in this following post. Plus, it would have saved a lot of time for making my chocolate bar image.
