Too little memory for 16bit displacements but 32bit exports fine?

I have a problem where I can not export 16 bit displacement maps. Neither from the displacement section in the tools menu or with the multimap exporter. When I check the 32bit button, everything exports perfectly but if I uncheck the button I’ll get a error telling me that I have probably too complicated object and that I’ve run out of memory and then zbrush crashes.

My specs:
Amd Phenom II hexcore 3ghz 1055t, 8gb ram.

According to the mem section in preferences I should be able to have up to 21 million polygons. My model is around 12 million polygons and yet I run out of memory? I’ve tried putting Undo levels to 1 while I export with the same results. My compact mem setting is at 4096.

I found this a bit weird. Shouldn’t 16bit export just fine if I can export a 32bit map?

Thanks.

I forgot to mention I’m on Windows 7.

I get the insufficient memory as well if I try to create a 32bit displacement map with “3 channels”.

I have DPSubPix set to 0. Maxpolypermesh is 21.89, my totalpoints are 14.9.

I’m trying to create 4k maps.

I’ve removed most of my layers by merging them.

Is there anything I can try to get either 16 bit or a 3 channel displacement maps to export?

Getting more ram is not possible since zbrush does not support it. I already have 8gb.

Is it normal that 32bit maps can export just fine but not 16bit for 10+ mill polygon models?
