In Book of the New Sun (Gene Wolfe) there are ancient Towers. As you read the book, (if you are paying close attention) you realize the ātowersā are Migration Spaceships, and the Citadel is actually an ancient Spaceport with a thousand years of ad-hoc accumulation built on top of the un-launched rockets.
This image really evokes the emotion of that for me.
