Hi guys,
I picked up Zbrush 4 days ago. I’ve never done anything 3D but have had fun with Zbrush. My current issue is lips. I don’t know where to begin or what tools are best to use. I’ve watched a few tutorials but they don’t seem to be as thorough as I feel I need. I can post an example of what I’ve made so far but in my most recent sculpt I haven’t even started on the basis of the lips. It feels like no matter what I do I just can’t create anything that is even remotely realistic.
The first tip that can be given would be to avoid subdividing too soon. This applies to all modeling, really but is very important for something like lips. Get the form shaped well, with a polygon flow that supports the shape of the lips that you’re trying to create. Subdivide only when you can’t get any more definition from the current level. Doing this would even let you crease certain edges to help them retain their shape better when you subdivide, naturally forming the harder edges.
A very common mistake for early ZBrush users is to divide away and then start sculpting. That always results in puffy/lumpy models with vague forms.
The nice thing is that ZBrush sports multi-resolution subdivision editing. This means that if you discover you’ve divided too soon (or even if you want to go back and refine a base form a bit) you can drop down to the right subdivision level for your needs, sculpt, then return to the higher levels.
