Awesome!
really cool modeling, traditional sculpture way…
I’ll work on an explanation of it. In short, I draw the skull in there first then I add the muscles and fat from there. If my skull is right in the beginning then I don’t need to do anymore work.

wow perfect just perfect. It looks as if it is a real life sculpt I would pay to see this in a museum. I just love it. You are a really great artist. wow again. I have to ask did you change the mouth in the top pics or was it just the angle of the render? This should be top row. A loyal fan always.
It is truly astounding how masterful your peices are, such a source of artistic wonders =).
Masterful as always Ryan. That rake brush is magic.
Thats crazy lookin good!!!
Incredible work Ryan!!! Just amazing!!!
Well done. But, Ryan, this kind of sculpting is for practice or prototyping?, becouse it’s obvious that it isn’t for a game… well done anyways
Thanks impertinent. It was done for art.
Seavannah, Yari Jindou, WoodyLWG, Giantsun, Deception - Thanks for the kind words.
Seavannah - I changed the mouth from my very first post but then I edited those images too. the new images below are simply with a new texture and hair.

Impertent -
Here is an update. The constant cross-hatching can eventually leave you with very fine pore detail. You can see it in the nose more.
Voodoo Monkey showed me this workflow a few weeks ago. It was really cool to watch him. So, in essense, this could be used for your character or game work. Its been used in Make-up FX for all kinds of creatures.
Alexleia - thats a honor to hear it from you! Thanks. I love your recent dude with a cigarette! Reminds me of Mickey Spillane novels.

stunning work…absolutly love it!
wow…nice sculpture look…and very hard to do that details…
wow artistically awesome. Which is the point.
Now the discussion: If I do game models, knowing I can get good results with this technique you are using, is it really worth to spend the extra time? seems like it is not. Can you confirm is this is faster or slower than doing a smooth surface and finish it with alphas?
Hello DDS - this is about 6 to 8 hours of work. I think the important thing is to find the workflow that suits your brain. I love this workflow because it enables me to sketch with clay tubes and refine with the rake. You may substitute the Smooth brush for the rake or even the Flatten brush.
Try it and let me know if it works for you. Ultimately, this is just one way. If you see someone like Maddam sculpt he has a different technique and some of his own really killer brushes but at the end its about the result and the model you produce.
I am also very fascinated by sculptors like Richard McDonald and Paige Bradley right now as well as the idea of digital sculpting so the rake brush really helps me explore this merger of digital and traditional.
Best,
Ryan
Ryan, this is a great study, it looks like he has somthing to say… great looking artwork.
And just when I thought it could get no better…wow very cool very cool indeed. Love the texture. Great job.
Hi Ryan. Could you post some sculpting session video? (yours of course), becouse my “brain flow” is very similar to your one, and seeing you in acyion could be very pedagogic.
Thank you in advance.
