The Sketchbook of TiMrozek

Hi everyone, I really like this sketchbook idea. Think it will be a good way to motivate me to keep making work, especially finished work. I’ll try to fill this with mostly finished or close to finished works. Don’t want to bog it down with too many WIPs per project. Anyway, to start I’m just gonna do an art dump of some concept stuff and general sketches/semi-finished works.

This was my final submission for cgtalk’s 22nd Hardcore Modeling Challenge. The challenge was to pick a classic piece of art and make a self portrait with it. My base was The Death of Marat by David. Haven’t had a chance to bring it into maya for a proper render yet but still intend to do so in time.

Just a small update and wider shot of a current character I’m working on. He’s part of a short film I’m working on with some friends for fun. Sort of a film noir animated short. His name is Charlie and he’s on the wrong side of someone elses ire.

Alright, I’m nearing the finish line on a model for a project at work. Should be a cool study. I’m building a female Rhesus Macaque monkey that will be animated doing a series of facial expressions that will be shown to baby Rhesus monkeys. I don’t know all the science behind it because that’s not really what I do, but it’s some sort of cognitive research on social activities between mothers and children. Using eyetracking hardware and software they will be able to see exactly where the babies focus to see what aspects of different expressions are important, imitated, etc.

So here is the current model screen capped in zbrush. Not finished yet but getting close.

ZBrush needs to add a Hair tool, so you can actually paint on hair, then a Shave and a Haircut type of program so you can brusch the hair in specific directions, specify curliness of hair, etc.

Got back to my large 1950’s man this evening. I’ve been able to really develop every aspect except the overcoat so far. Got a little done on that but not much. Anyway, feel free to comment or ask questions about any of this stuff. Hoping to start giving him some color soon.

Decided that it was time to call my Rhesus model complete. I could work on it forever but eventually you have to move on. Here’s the final model, texture might be altered just a tad still. Next up is bringing him into maya, getting the eyes set up properly, struggling with displacement or normal maps, etc.

Main differences from last post are as follows. I fixed the general width of the top part of the head, worked out some of the lumps, got the ears to much closer resemble that of a rhesus (they were too big and humanlike before), and eyewidth. Also added some more layers to the skin texture.

Anyway, any C&C is welcome. I still have time if I want to still touch up the model.

Timrozek.

Hi, timrozek, is that tim for short? I like the stuff you have in here. The rhesus monkey is a really nice study. Not flashy, just a good, well done model.

I also was interested to see the rendition of the death of marat. Really nicely done. Coming from a fine art background i often wonder whether there have been many 3d versions of famous pictures. It all looks pretty smooth.

love the fat man still alot to do but youre good

benhobden: Thanks! Yeah, the name is Tim Mrozek but with a username of TiMrozek I save time on the “M” . Anyway, cool that you have a fine art background too. As do I, you should check out the final submissions for that challenge if you are interested in classic styled 3d works. There is some stuff out there. Actually one of the better guys at it, used the name oDDity but he was banned from a lot of sites and I’m having trouble finding his work right now. Still you might be able to find some of his work if you google search enough. He goton some people’s bad side, but he did some seriously good classic style work. CGtalk gallery for the challenge is here:

adampof: Thank you, yeah, he’s a work in progress, but he’s a been a fun character to work on.

I really like the Death of Marat image

I’m very jealous of those who can do really great speed sculpts. My intention is to really start doing this on a daily basis to just build up a large library of concepts. Gotta keep this thread interesting with finished, serious, and super fast pieces. I probably won’t do a good job at doing them every day but we’ll see. Anyway, here’s my first.

Time: 45 minutes.

[BigMouthSnaky01.jpg]

About to get back to some more serious models but I’ve been keeping up with doing 1 speed sculpt a day (think i may have missed 1 day) so here are 3 new ones. I really like this exercise. After just 4 I feel like I’m loosening up a bit and just getting better at not wasting time thinking too hard about my next stroke or edit. So here they are:

nice work tim. Blue spec lighting?

Love the teeth of the first guy. Watch out for the ears on the third

Thanks Ben. I think they are all the dj_blue_tech 01 matcap.

Curious what you mean by watch the ears?

Not heard of that matcap before. Is that in the pixologic matcp lib? The second seems to have more of a blue lighting thing going on? The ears on the third, look like…

…I think maybe their could be more of a lobe, and the rim around the back edge of the ear seems a little thin or flat. It looks like it could curve in on itself a little bit more?

I dont like giving crit…:frowning:

Yeah, the matcap is under mattes on pixologic’s download section. Ha, really feel free to crit away all you want. I’ve been creating things long enough to not get offended by any form of criticism. Yeah, they are a bit flat, I agree. But hey, I’m trying to keep them around 50 minutes for whatever random reason so they are what they are. But that’s what is fun and a great challenge about severely limiting the amount of time you work on a project. You really have to decide quickly what parts work, are good enough, and need attention.

ha. cool. I still find it a bit hard. You spend hours working on something, then someone comes along and goes …‘you missed a bit’. did you actually set a time limit for yourself then?

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think I take criticism better than I give it sometimes. Still though, it’s all just part of it all. You’ve gotta know how to use criticism and not be offended by it or you don’t get better really. Anyway, yeah, for the speed sculpts I’ve giving myself a time limit of 60 minutes max, but I’m trying to keep it at 50. For some reason a 50 minutes is a really good time for me. An hour and you start wanting to really put lots of time in and under 50 can be tough (for me anyway) to really have anything that looks remotely like a finished concept. So all of these were 50 minutes and the horned guy was 45 minutes.

Haven’t posted for awhile so I suppose it’s due time to do so again.

I’m currently participating in cgsociety.com’s current hardcore modeling challenge. The theme is simply The Oceans and the rules seemed to emphasize capturing the organic motion of everything underwater. So I decided to do the epic battle of the Colossal Squid battling a Sperm Whale. I still have a ways to go but I thought I would share my 2 current models with everyone. Both are WIPs although the whale is getting pretty close to completion.

Hope you enjoy.
