The Panther Man

Here is what I’m working on now. I always see aliens on the forums, so I wanted to see if I could come up with a nice design. This is what resulted.

I call him Panther Man right now as that’s an apt description of him. I’m pretty happy with his lines and flow so far. If you guys have any comments, feel free to add them, as he’s still very much a WIP.

Thanks for looking…

It’s a great start Dickie, I like the material and lighting you’ve used too.

I’m curious about what technique you used to achieve the globes of the eyes, is that a composite mesh?

very nice design.
maybe it doesn’t look like a panther, but hey, its your child and name it as you wish

keep up posting updates

Antimorph: The material is just a simple one with a wee bit of specular. It helps me see the forms better. As for the eyes, they are just spheres I dropped in after I placed the head model. Glad you like him…

Turx: Glad you like the design. Yeah, I wasn’t sure what to call him as he looks like a gopher too… I’ll see where I go from here with him and then rename him accordingly…

very kewl design, Dickie…reminds me a bit of the shape shifters from the Stephen King movie Sleepwalkers. As always I am looking forward to seeing more  damned I’m greedy

ps. thnx for your nice comments earlier…glad you liked the piece and I will try to fix that nostril…(it bugged me too)

Hi Dickie,

I like your alien model wip. We are brothers in mind I think, because I work on
an alien bust too (but a female).
I have a few suggestions, but you know it’s only my opinion.
I find the ears to high. If ears are so high they have mostly not a human form.
I find the panther idea very well, maybe you can make cat ears for him.
The front sight looks very well, but I dont like the neck. Maybe also more a panther neck, this means more from front to back not from up to down.
I think the chin needs more definition and maybe not so long.
A good test for the overall form is to make a silhouette render.
Think he is in a movie an you see him the first time with backlight (like Alien or
Predator)

Cheers

Ralf Stumpf

Great start, the idea is crisp the and model looks awesome. I can’t wait to see more from you and this model!

RON: I haven’t seen Sleepwalkers, now I gotta go find some images of them to see… As for my comments, they are well deserved…:+1:

Stumpf: Happy holidays, Bro! I’m happy you like the design so far. I’m actually not going for a panther character, he just kinda reminded me of one a little…
I placed his ears high to make him more alien-like, so I guess I succeded in that aspect. I might go for more cat-like ears though. I tried the neck facing towards the rear, but since this character is bipedal, it made him a little hunchbacked. I definately agree with the neck being too skinny. I need to adjust the proportions to make it thicker, as it will give him more mass.
The chin is always problematic for me, as I always exaggerate them… I’ll see what I can do to define the musculature more, as it is too smooth now.
Thank you for taking the time to comment, my friend. If it were not for your work as inspiration, my models would still be lumpy. Your clean lines and flow are a BIG influence on my style and have improved my modeling structure in many good ways…:+1:

Moweddp: Thanks for the kind comment… I hope to get a nice character out of this one. He still needs LOADS of work…

Dickie

I love the concept Dickie. The execution is excellent as usual. How long does it take to get it to this stage.

Vlad: This one took me 2 days or so. As I usually don’t work from a sketch, it can take me a while to hit what I’m looking for. Sometimes I get lucky and get it right the first day. Some days I’ll actually end up scrapping 4 hours sculpting because I oversculpted a piece. It’s very easy to go off on a tangent without a sketch… . “Fishing” around for a design is a lot of fun in Z-Brush though.

I’ve never been formally trained in design and it’s always been my weak point. But since I’ve been using Z-Brush and learning from the artists on this forum, I am getting pretty good at it. At least for my standards…

I don’t work from reference so I can get my skills up in designing my own characters. I probably should do a couple of busts from reference so I get better in that aspect…

I like seeing your work Dickie, so far so good here. Can’t wait to see how this turns out!

Look forward to the updates

Keep it up Dickie!Waiting for more updates,:+1: :+1: :+1:

Very cool character design. Nice musculature and proportions. Looking forward to seeing more of this. Nice job!
