The New guy asking for help

Hello ZBrush,
I just recently joined the forum because I need some tech help and figured it made sense to ask people who might have gone through the same headaches I have. In the past I used MAYA 2009-2010 and now currently use MAYA 2011 and ZBRUSH, hence my name choice  , and have some questions.

Issue 1.
I have created an item in MAYA, GoZ’d it to clean it up and sent it back to MAYA. One back inside MAYA, I want to look at the UV map to figure out what I’m coloring. I select it and pick UV Texture editor, but when it opens, I just get a gray field with no white outline maps. Any helpful hits, ideas, or suggestions?

Issue 2.
I made a jacket in ZBrush. I have the same problem as in issue 1 but with a different question. Now that it has been detailed, sometimes I click on it in MAYA and MAYA shuts down. Is this because my system lacks processing power or is it the graphics card? If it’s just the processor, can I upgrade the software? Or do I have to buy graphics/ processing hardware for my system?

I look forward to any and all help and thanks for your input.
Have a nice day,

well i can only try and help with problem 2 cause i dnt really use goz…well with the exporting mesh’s i would say you are probably tryin to import a very high res mesh thats why its crashing on you, wat would be best is to go back down a few subdivisons where you dont have like say 20k + polys and try importin and see how that goes. well try it under 20k and if that works sweetly test out see if u can get more than that in maya without it crashing so u know ur limits. also u cud decimate the model before going into maya, decimation master shud come with zb4. but make sureu save ur work first, always save. lol. hope it helps

Dear gdkvisions,
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll look up Decimation Master and see how to work it properly so I can give it a shot later. I have some good news. I fiddled around with ZBrush a bit and finally figured out UV Master. The result: GoZ items now have UVs in MAYA. WOO - HOO  ! I saved it and know the next time I try to work it, MAYA will crash, so I’ll have to work it again using Decimation Master. Also, I’ll have to work out some other areas on the jacket because I’m somehow painting both the outside AND inside.

Last thing before I go. My comp has 6 GBs of RAM and someone I talked to says that it should be enough to handle the MAYA issue I have, yet I still have the issues. So I’ll look around and figure out my next move.

Thanks for the tips,
Technology_Hates_Me

ah glad you got it sorted. erm with the ram issues are you running a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system and also is your maya a 32 bit or 64bit? tis is quite important because a 32bit system will only use up to 3 or 4 gb of ram and not all of it. a 64 bit will use up to 8gb+ of ram. so if you have 6gb and running a 32bit os and 32 bit maya you will be only using about 4gb of ram and the other 2 are wasted. so might be an idea to upgrade ur maya to 64bit and the os too that means u can use your full 6gb no problem and not be wasting 2 gb atm.

Dear gdkvisions,
I just checked the system and I’m using a 64-bit MAYA on a 64-Bit Operating system. Should I upgrade my RAM or what? Also, before that, I will try to learn and use Decimation Master to see if that helps. And if all else fails, I’m thinking about going back to polygon square one  . I’ll start again with my lowers rez model of the jacket and try to work it with the Decimation Master and other ways to prevent this. But I just want to make sure my system can handle the power or if it needs to be upped.
Thanks again,
Technology_Hates_Me

Dear gdkvisions,
I tried Decimation Master and IT WORKS! . D.M. + UV Master = MAYA finally working for me. Thanks for your help and I hope the next time I make a post it has something good in it and not asking for tech support  .
Have a nice day,

P.S. This is one of the few time my name doesn’t apply to me  .
