The MASK- SSSSOMEBODY STOP MEH!!!!!

Hi all, I’ve always been a huge fan of the Mahnke/Arcudi Mask Darkhorse graphic novel. In my opinion it is wayyy better than the Jim Carrey film, I decided as I have finished making lowpoly video game characters for my portfolio I could really cut loose and do a 3d version of the cover image from the Mask graphic novel. This was also an exercise for me in assymetric sculpting, the only symmetry I allowed myself was to use a biped for the original pose(a method I learned from Aurick, thanks!) and in the initial head sculpt. Anyway here are some renders. Comments welcome!

hah thats pretty awesome…NOW TEXTURE IT!

I love the Mask
Great version!

Looks really good! Some really nice detail in the clothes and personality in the face is well good.

If anything I’d say try and make some of the edges smoother/crisper like round his lips and cheek bones perhaps? And make more of the creases in places maybe? A texture would probably do it fine though.

Probably can’t make his tie hang down at this point right ? :stuck_out_tongue:

REALLY like where this is headed. I think everything needs a bit of a tweak, just go over everything again and sharpen things up a bit. I have found that the flatten tool with lazy mouse on works well for drapery if you run it along an edge of a wrinkle, the same for the pinch tool on top of the wrinkle or subtract it on the edges of the wrinkles. Besides that I have nothing else to say in the “critique” area. I absolutely love the smoke from the bomb and the flame from the zippo. I like the way you executed them via clay as opposed to after effects. Good job and PLEASE keep up the awesome work!:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Wow, great feedback guys!

rkrehe20 - thanks! I have divided the model in to subtools specifically to add different shaders and textures to them eventually.

Santis- thanks!

Kaydee - cheers! yeh i think the wrinkles need some work. The tie would is part of the shirt subtool but perhaps I can add a new tool and project the tie detail onto it

PittGilman - Thanks! I think you are right there are several areas I have seen in the renders I posted which need refinement, I will look into that

Hi again! I know some of the details need to be refined but I read about how to assign different materials to different subtools and had to have a go, even just to assign the metal material to the spikes! Comments welcome!

Thats really good :).

That is pretty sweet! I know several of the people that worked on the VFX for the original feature and I think this would bring back some memories of fond moments. Oh wait, those aren’t public domain yet…

If you’re doing you own version of that cover, this is pretty darn decent. However if the goal was to translate that cover into a 3D sculpt, a little more work is needed. You tell me…

DanRoberts - Thanks!

Jason Belec -Thanks! Cool! Did you work on the VFX for the mask as well? In answer to your question, this is my version of the cover. I was trying to reach a halfway point between the cover and the look of the rest of the comic. I tweaked the model based on what I thought looked right from different angles rather than concentrating entirely on the front view on the cover. I also took a couple of artistic liberties like exaggerating the size of the spikes and making slightly more realisticm looking teeth than the ones on the cover.

This looks amazing. keep it up man!

Hello Finbo, not me, I was working on HD camera development technology for Panavison/Sony at the time.

I think you did very well, it’s got that comic shop shelf appeal. All the best.

Very well made, I really like this one.

LOL this one is funny. only thing I would say is that the jacket looks like he took it from ghost rider.

Crazy job! :+1: i love the whole model but the flames a cool !!
