The little world of...

Amazing work simon, as I suppose should be expected of someone hailing from Blur.

Picked up 3D World 105 today, has your ‘Arain’ piece covering most of the first two pages in the exhibition section. Would post a scan but no scanner atm. Congrats.

Got a few questions though sense I do mostly game art (which means I can normaly be blissfuly ignorant on some of this hardcore rendering stuff :p):

  1. Do you always render and composit in layers with fusion/photoshop?
  2. You said you use mental ray exposure control, are you refering to logarithmic/automatic/linear/pseudo as their doesnt seem to be any new ones available when enabling mental ray as opposed to scanline (Though I’m using max9 so maybe it’s a new feature…)?
  3. Do you set any special parameters with the photometric light sources (ex: hdr projection)?
  4. could you post a pic of your crabs sss material setup, or perhaps give some general tips on dealing with the sss material?

Thanks for any help you can give answering these questions, and looking forward to more updates.

THANK you so much for the nice comments!!! what a good motivation to continue to improve my works, concentrate more and more on the shapes and style ! thanks

Xila, thanks buddy , you’re a warior too, it was nice to suffer with you on our last project !!

Siller : Thanks for the comments ! the RVB displace is verry simple, its done by moving your red , green or blue channel a little bit to create a photographic artifact who give a lot of realism! you can do that in all post production software, like photoshop , fusion etc… if you zoom on the pictures you can see the effect clearly, look at the pic below !

PolyHertz :
haha good to have a feedback of the 3d world issue thanks
For your questions,

  1. for a final picture i always do a post production work, it (nearly) always bring a second life to my pictures
  2. yess its a new feature since MAx 2008, the mental ray photographic exposure control allow you to tweack a lot your lighting directly in max , and have a better control of your renders quickly … i luv’ it
  3. i use hdri for environments, or skylights, but not so much on the lights themselves, even if its good too to give a realistic lighting . the areas light give really good results basically.
  4. For the sss shader, there’s really nothing special, as it react differently depending on your scene scale, there’s no “perfect” setting, i just play with the 3 epidermal and subdermal parameters, trying to get something good, and i adjust the specular weight and shininess to get wet effects or plastic feeling… that’s it, very simple, basically the shader is well configured, for a REAL scale of your scene, so if your scene scale is not exact, you’ll have to force a lot the parameters of your subdermal and backsurface to get the translucency

I hope it helps, happy zbrushing !!
and here some new speedzzz sculpts and experiments … good to have time to sculpt aarg! the crab will be back soon hehe

I really like the angular head. Kind of reminds me of Hades from Disney’s Hercules.

What originality!
Great stuff :+1:

Hello everybody!!

Here’s my last personnal picture, a kind of funny tribute to pirates of carribean, i started this one from scratch in Zbrush, playing around with zspheres and…the idea comes to me !

You’ll find the Hi res pic (4K)

I really hope you’ll have a smile when you will see this one, have fun !

Hi-Res Versionsimonblanc09.jpg

hahahaha!! Thats hilarious. The look in his eyes reminds me of my dog when its confused lol.

The only thing i could say is that the octupus that running away could be leaning forward slightly to sell that “get the hell out of here before im eaten”.

Wonderful image. Made me smile!

great piece, both original and well executed. And it made me smile, which makes it good in my book:)

I agree with DAnconias idea, only I would probably do kind of the opposite, bend the upper part backwards to give a more cartoony style to it. As if his legs are moving too fast for his jell-o head to follow, I think that would convey the whole “running away” part better. Right now, he’s just sorta hangin out on the table there.
Another idea is to either put the spaghetti in his mouth or between the chopsticks, as if you’re kind of surprising him in the middle of his meal.

Anyway, I really liked this one. Keep it up!

Wow, fantastic work! You’ve got a big fan here!

Awesome work, nothing more to say! Top row!!
