Its nice to see you guys really pushing the limits of the PS3. You still managed to push the detail and realism, tip toeing around the uncanny valley without falling in, awesome work, great cloth and detail.

Since Naughty Dog seems to have a real tradition with sharing techniques and process I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind answering some questions for the community:

  1. How large was the character team size, how many characters did you need to produce and in what time frame?
  2. How long did it take to sculpt a hero character vs npc's?
  3. Was any scan data used and if so in what capacity?
  4. The eyes in these images are not half closed, and the mouths are not open like in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myZcUvU8YWc Was that done as a post process after getting the look down?
  5. For the body pose was that your neutral state for generating normal maps, if so did you have any issues under the arm pits or other places?
  6. Was there a predefined rig that you had to match the characters to or was the initial skeleton defined by the sculpt?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks once again for sharing.

i want to post a comment again cause those works are beyond my imagination about detailing and realism…at this point a description about some process will be a real gift for all of us in particularly : hair, skin details and final rendering. Masterpieces!

OMG!
Very inspirational.
thank you for sharing your beautiful work Mike! :+1:

Cheers

Luca

outstandind!

Between characters, environments, the story and solid gameplay, you’ve easily made a masterpiece worthy if the title of game of the year. As beautiful as this game is, it’s kind of bitter sweet that it came this late in the PS3’s console generation, and not as a PS4 launch title looking even more amazing. Nice work as always Naughty Dog.

I loved this game from beginning to end. You guys are masters of your craft in both, gameplay and game art. Looking forward to playing your next PS4 game.

My God these are amazing! Great work!

Do you have any tips for creating the alphas for the hair and laying down the planes? Was it just sort of a trial and error type thing where you were rendering out each time to see placement? Thanks!

Insane guy and very inspiring congratulations

Holy…!

Finished the game like 5 minutes ago, and now I see this thread.

Congratulations on an amazing game. Easily one of my best experiences this generation. And the work, what can I say, it just blows my mind. Some of the best work I’ve ever seen.

Awesome…

wow … amazing work :+1:

Great character design work from the initial design concepts. Like Ellie’s character design and concept the most. Much better design from the initial concept art designs I seen. She still reminds me of Ellen Page of Beyond: Two Souls even with the alteration. After reading how you created the skin textures, I am definitely going to develop my technique using as such.

Very nice work. Some of the best skin detailing I’ve seen.

Awesome Stuff!! :+1::wink:
