The creative vision of the Visually impaired

Hey everyone, my name is Kevin Garcia (ItbeRufus). Just about 3 years ago I began a really incredible and very inspiring journey, and it was kind of an accident. First a little bit of a background story, and then I will dive into what is really important. I have been working in ZBrush for about 6 years now as a digital sculptor for product at LittleWonder Studio. I fell in love with the program, as so many of us do, and have always been striving to keep up with every new feature and find new ways to use it and share my knowledge.
Meanwhile, in another part of my brain, I had for a very long time wanted to volunteer at Braille Institute. The organization had a large impact on me when I was a child and visited one of the campuses. Long story short, I finally motivated myself enough to go in and look into what I could do to help. My initial intent was to assist in a sculpting class. I really wanted to share what I know as a visual artist with those that have a completely different perspective of creating and perceiving art.
During my interview the Director of Volunteers at the time, Michelle Sheridon, asked me what it was I did for a living. I explained it as best as I could and showed her some images I had on my phone of my work. She became incredibly excited and asked, “can you teach a class in this?” My response was, “I don’t know, can I?” Being new to the world of visual impairment, it had gone completely over my head that most have some level of vision and actually could learn how to use ZBrush. Now came the big question,

How the heck do a make this happen?!

Not long after I started volunteering I started my hunt to get in contact with the folks at Pixologic. I found what we were trying to do interesting, so I thought maybe they would. Couldn’t hurt to ask right? I sent an email to Jaime Labelle (CEO) and kept my fingers crossed. About a week later I was surprised to hear back from one of their marketing reps saying that they would like to know more and if they could meet with me the following week to talk about their involvement. The meeting floored me. They were so excited to help in any way they could to make this happen, and in these past 2 and a half years that has never changed. I have learned through this process how much of a dedicated and generous company Pixologic is.

Getting off the ground! After months of planning we finally had everything in order to have a test run of how this whole process was going to work. We selected a few choice students from the institute and did a 5 week crash course to see what worked and what didn't. There was a huge learning curve for everyone. For me, it was finding the best way to deliver the material for a group with various vision levels. For the students, 1) figuring out what they needed to work comfortably, and 2) starting from scratch in a very different kind of software that any of them were used to. It was a challenge for sure, but what was amazing, was that it worked.

In those 5 weeks they learned how to navigate the software, interact with a 3D object, and most importantly, CREATING!!! The students loved it! Never did they think that they would be able to create in such a way in the computer. The skill and experience range varied a lot as well. Some students were still very new to the world of computers, while others were very uncertain about their skills in art. By the end they were all navigating comfortably and enjoying how easy it was to dive in.

What is the plan moving forward? Things have been going great. The students have been developing more advanced techniques and really embracing the software as a tool for their art. Together we are mighty, but we are small. There are so many more I feel that are missing out one what ZBrush has to offer them. I would love to grow the program and see if we can get a class going at other institutes. In order to do that though, I will need help from the community. If you would like to know more about the program and how you can help, contact me at "][email protected]. If you would simply like to become a volunteer at Braille Institute, go to BrailleInstitute.org to find the campus near you to see where you can get started.

Thank you all for you interest and I can’t wait to show you more of what the students here are doing. They are all now members of ZBrushCentral, so you can see their work and learn more of their experience with the software directly.

Thank you to the folks at Pixologic for coming by to visit and meet with the students!

All work seen is by students. These students have varying levels of visual impairment, and use various types of assistance in order to work in the software. I will be doing feature stories on each of them in the months ahead and they will soon be active members of the community here.

Meet the students and help them feel welcome!!

Thank you man!
I love the work you are doing for people who need a friendly hand!
your work is really inspiring!

Great job!!! Thank you Kevin for all the work you do and for posting the work. They are creating some amazing pieces.

Thanks everyone!!! It has been great, and I really can’t wait to show what all of the students have been doing. We have students at all skill levels, so it is a great and interesting mix

Truly, truly inspiring… Thanks for sharing your story.

excellent work and very inspiring story  Keep it up!

Wow! Your story has brought tears to my eyes. I was born with toxoplamosis and my field of vision is pretty minimum. It can’t be correct by surgery or glasses and I was told that eventually I would go completely blind within the next ten years or so. Its an amazing thing what your doing; as an avid user of Zbrush I can tell you how amazing it is that for a person losing sight - Zbrush really helps me “see”. Please continue doing the wonderful job you are doing. ! am looking forward to reading your class stories!

Thank you SOOOO MUCH KreativApe3D!!! I would really love to hear from you too. Struggles and successes. I really wish you were closer, because I would love to have the students meet you. Please let me know if you are ever in California. In the mean time, I will tell the students a little of your story and show your work to them if you don’t mind. And if you have any advice for them, or want to record a video message or demo, I would be honored to share it with them. I think they would really enjoy hearing about someone who has been pushing forward in the program on their own so they can see they don’t need to stay stranded in our little class. Our class is wonderful, but I want them to be able to take these skills and really soar

Hey your welcome! And please share my work and my story; I would be honored for you to do so! Here’s a bit of information about Toxoplasmosis http://www.ssc.education.ed.ac.uk/resources/vi&multi/eyeconds/Toxop.html. I would love record a video message for your class also. I will try to get to it over the next two weeks because I only have weekends available as I work during the week. I’ll think I’ll do a demo and a video message in one. If ever I am in California, I will look you up as I would love to attend a couple of your classes. Best believe you are doing something wonderful and have my utmost appreciation for it.

Thank You!

April

Wow. Very inspiring story  Keep it up!
