Texturing whole tool

Greetings everyone,

I am quite new to ZBrush, I have been dappling with the program for a few days now and managed to create a little weapon using 3D Studio Max for the base mesh and imported it without any problems into ZBrush (until I found out I can just about use the GoZ plugin :/).
Anyway, the problem is, at one part of the tutorial I am following the instructor applied a wood texture to the tool (the object; a hammer made up of 4 subtools).

In the tutorial it doesn’t show how ZBrush added the texture to the entire tool instead of the selected subtool. When I follow along with the same exact settings/button presses the texture is not applied so I go to “Color” and hit the “FillObject” button but it applies the texture to the subtool I am selecting alone.

How can I manage to apply the texture to the entire tool and not only subtools?

Thank you very much!

(note: the tutorial is Digital Tutors: Creating Game Weapons with Maya and ZBrush).

apply the texture to each subtool.

tool>subtool>select subtool.
tool>texture>select texture

I thought of such, however in the tutorial the instructor changed the texture once and it applied to the same object (wood texture) so the variations of the texture itself was spread over the whole object.

Now if I did that, the texture won’t spread over the entire object, each object will have a different UV. While I want the entire tool to have one global UV

which version of zBrush is the tutorial using? Older versions only had one texture slot…all or nothing.

If you want different UV’s for your mesh you can apply different settings inside of tool>UV

You can also give them a proper UV set using UV master or another unwrapper.

Honestly I don’t know, but from what I see since the UI is different from the one I have and in an earlier tutorial he advised to reset the UI he is using an older version (Could be wrong though).

I found a work around to what he did, I managed to pick the texture create an Alpha from the texture and drag it over the objects I want slowly. However it proved a hell of a deal when he pressed a button called Text>Col which I couldn’t find (to convert the texture to the colors and apply it to the alpha). I had to color it manually instead.

Thank you very much for the reply nonetheless

he’s using 3, 3.1 I believe.

tool>polypaint>polypaint from texture

That is the new button location and name.
