Texturing/Resolution Help: Zbr and Max

I exported a low-poly model from max into Zbrush just to do some simple coloring. I watched and read a great deal of tutorials and it works fine, but when I import the unwrap back into max and apply it, it is very, very low res and looks horrible. My unwrap is good because I checkered it in max to make sure. I’m looking for an answer that doesn’t include photoshop. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Steps I took:
1.) exported obj with unwrap.
2.) imported into zbrush
3.) converted to polymesh
4.) turned off smoothing
5.) divided 6 times
6.) created some layers
7.) colored to my hearts content
8.) lowered model res back to 1
9.) converted color to texture
10.) exported the map
11.) imported to diffuse in max material editor
12.) flipped uvs to make it fit, no tiling or stretching necessary.
13.) rendered the model: it fits fine, but looks very low-res and pixelated

That’s where you went wrong. Convert color to texture at the highest subdivision level so you get the highest resolution of your texture.
