Textures changing model

I have a peice of “wood” in 3ds max. When I export this peice as an obj, and open it inside zbrush the actual mesh has changed to a wood shape pattern instead of being smooth. I took off the materials and still get this problem. I turned off all texture or mat library options in the export dialog and it still won’t work. I’m just trying to get a smooth object I can sculpt on.
