texture on subtool but not brushes

I’m working with a subtool that has a texture on it, it needs to be on it and not polypainted, however when i use any of the brushes they keep using the texture if i mask etc.
how do i keep the texture active for the subtool but not for the brushes?

you have to polypaint it for what you want to do.

Why “can’t” it be polypaint?

Because i don’t want a high res model floating around in the background slowing me down, using memory. I’m surprised you can’t disable this for the brushes, without it effecting your tools. thanks.

I believe on 3.12 you can (could be wrong though).

Also, Zbrush doesn’t look at your subtools when it’s eating RAM. That is the beauty of subtools. So having the highres in the background doesn’t matter…only the one that is currently active matters. At least that is what they tell me. And I’m going to have to believe them as Having 30million polygons on screen would kill any system…but if you have 30 subtools each at a million you don’t see any slowdown.

goast666 is right. When a model has multiple SubTools, only the active one is using any appreciable portion of your system’s resources. Each SubTool can contain the maximum number of polygons that your system can handle. I’ve seen very impressive work done with models that were made up of over 100 million polygons, but the artist was still able to work efficiently because it was split into 20 or so SubTools.

PolyPaint provides many, many advantages. For one thing, you can temporarily delete your UV’s. This frees up system resources which in turn results in better performance with a given SubTool. Once you’re done painting, you can re-import the UV’s and then convert your paint to a texture. That also means you can change your UV’s at any time without losing any of your painting. This results in a much more flexible workflow.

If you absolutely want to use texture, and want your brush to use texture as well, you need to use Projection Master. This lets you drop the model to the canvas so that you can select a painting brush (from the Tool palette) and give it a texture. You can then paint with it and use PM to pick the model back up again.
