Texture edit/smear

I have been searching around for a way to acheive the texture smearing technique displayed here for ZBrush 3.1 and although it seems possible its not nearly as accurate, the draw point jump all over the ZTool no matter how dense I make the projection plane3D.

I just saw Gnomon Texturing for Producton DVD and although relatively new the artist is using ZBrush 2 to do this. Is it not possible to do in ZBrush 3.1
