Tablet PC's

Are the iPads or any of the new clones like the Motorola Xoom pressure sensitive and can they be used as an alternative for a Wacom or the like?

I don’t think so. They would use their own OS to begin with and were designed to be nothing but a large screen PCD.

For the wacom or for the graphic tablets?

I used Acer Travelmate c110 for years, it has 10 inch screen and wacom pen for it.
Currently I am looking forward to release of HP Slate 500 which is also penabled TabletPC
but any penabled tabletPC will do.
Keep in mind that you will see the annoying lag between pencil and cursor which is noticeable (even though it is the same as with graphic tablets there you do not notice it).
The second problem is that your hand covers half of the screen all the time so I do not use it any more but just a wacom bamboo.

Thanks for the responses gentlemen. I’ve done a bit of internet searching and came to understand that the iPad wasn’t able to serve as a sketchpad. In addition I came across this page. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=187509
making me aware of window and pen based tablets as an option. I actually have an old Lenovo tablet that is pen based. I’ll probably give it a try.

@ milosp - Interesting, and good to know, that on the tablets or sketchpads that you are able to draw or sculpt right on the moniter image that you feel your hand interfers with your work. I hadn’t seen that when reading people’s gushings about the Cintique’s, up to now. I actually have a Bamboo too but have just made a few stabs at trying to use it. It always seems awkward and I end up back with my old mouse. I haven’t had Zbrush very long and still trying to get my arms around it and all the great tools and features. I understand that I’ll need to eventually get away from the mouse.

Thanks again

you could just build your own Graphics tablet-screen hybrid. nearly done with construction. made from my cybertablet m14 and a extremely cheap lcd monitor that was just a touchscreen laptop monitor they put in a regular case with a inverter. The monitor was easy as pie to take apart not much to strip down. just waiting on a extension cable for the power of the backlight because it was causing interference when mounted. other than that it is perfect. ~ http://forum.bongofish.co.uk/index.php?board=23 and http://www.tabletmod.com they have some flashy example but are way over cost.

Thanks for that information and links Jawa64. That seems like a very viable alternative.

no problem mate. any other questions feel free to ask I check the forums daily for people to help.
