Switching from Mudbox to Z - A Question

Hi there.
I am a long time user of Mudbox, and have enjoyed using it until the numerous bugs broke the proverbial straw…

Anyway, I have a project underway in Mudbox 2010, and im migrating it to Zbrush 3.1

I have exported some level 3 or 4 meshes, got them in Z, and used the reconstruct subdiv feature on most of the meshes, works a treat… loving Z, BUT! one of my meshes cannot be subdivided, even though it is clean, all quads, and a level 3 mesh.

I am wondering if there is a way to ‘project’ the detail of the level 3 mesh onto a level 0 mesh that has been subdivided?

This can be done in Mudbox quite easily, and I’m looking for a solution before I start sculpting the model from scratch

Any guidance would be appreciated greatly :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi, glad to hear you are liking Zbrush. In answer to your question yes you can project detail from one mesh onto another. Simply open the sculpted tool and add the mesh you wish to project the detail onto as a subtool. Then divide the new subtool up to the desired level keep this tool as the selected one. Make sure the only other mesh visable is the one with all the detail you want to project then in the subtool palette click “project all”, this will transfer the details onto the new mesh. Version 3.5 has sliders which can help remove artifacts if they appear, though you may need to smooth out spiking at tight corners for example (though from my experience this can happen in mudbox when you apply a map displacement).
I hope this is relatively clear.

Does the model has UV enabled (under Tool > Texture in 3.1) once enable try the reconstruct subdiv again.

Great! Ill give that a try tonight. the leg mesh (lvl3) is a Sub-tool already but I cant break it out and put it back when it’s fixed.

Thanks for the advice Noises and Snake,
Yeah the model has UV’s in 1 tile, all clean UV’s

BTW. is there a known reason for Z - reconstruct subdiv not working sometimes on fully quadrangular meshes?
