surface details from an image?

Hi!

I would like to use an image as a basis of surface detail - in the same way as shown in the Z4 Spotlight and Lightbox intro video with the jeans.

A similar thing using 3DCoat is demonstrated here: http://www.youtube.com/ignertia#p/u/1/hn7eyg5ma6U

I’m completely new to ZBrush, so bear with my questions, but is this already possible in the current version?

If it is, I would appreciate a link to a tutorial  I don’t know the exact name of the technique and that makes searching really hard.

Thanks!

Hi there zwannalearn. Yes it is possible. You would load up your texture and convert it into an alpha (actually you could also use just the texture, as you can use it to paint a mask and then deform later).

Now for the actual painting process there are quite a lot of options. You could use the alpha as a stencil (which is quite similar to the way it is done in 3DCoat), you could use it as a brush alpha and paint away with it. Or you could use the projection master in order to have a bit more control.

So yes of course it is possible: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=33916

or: http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Stencil_Palette

Hope that helps

Thanks a lot!

After checking out the links you posted and browsing for some more videos, alpha as a stencil seems to do just the trick I was after!
