Hello. Well I’ve been using Zbrush casually for quite a while now, and I decided to finally post something to get some suggestions for improvement, I know I have a lot to learn.
With the new Superman film starting production and the recent release of his new comic book costume done by Jim Lee, I decided to try my hand and recreating it with a few of my own personal preferences thrown in.
I hope to turn it into a low poly model eventually and prepare it for animation. All criticisms and suggestions are welcome.
Really nice… but there seems to be something not quite right about the shoulders. They seem a little broad or thick. When viewed from the side, maybe it’s the biceps and triceps that aren’t thick enough, possibly the deltoids are too “under developed”… I just can’t put my finger on, other than to say that something in that region is off.
Still, really nice work. Better than ANYTHING that I can produce.
Have a blessed day,

Thank you very much! It’s been a long road getting to here…this is honestly the very first sculpt I’ve done that I looked at and went: “huh…that actually doesn’t look completely like butt”. I know it’s far from grade A material though.
I tried re-exploring the shoulders some and looked at some more reference…but I’m not entirely sure I fixed the problem…hard to tell. Here are some grey renders of the current sculpt:

hi, nice start, I think a little more understanding of anatomy may help, i think what kmkenpo says is right, but look a little closer, under the skin there are bones and muscles, these all connect and join in a certain way. look up how the deltoid, triceps and pectoralis all interact with each other for example, people dont question things that are right, you dont have to be an expert to spot something when its wrong, keep it up and well done
bing66 has hit on something here… feeling natural. I keep looking at the new version, and the shoulders and that group seem better, still not quite there with the pectoral and how it ties in… but something is now pushing me towards the ribcage. I seems a little large for the proportions of the current structure. Again, I am not an expert, just a Martial Arts instructor. I can dismantle the frame… but putting it back together is another thing all together. So, in my total armchair observer position, the shoulder muscle group is still a little off, the ribs seem a little bulky or blocky, and the lats seem to be a little under developed.
I absolutely mean no disrespect in the things I am saying or suggesting. I am only offering critiques of this from my point of view. It just seems to lack that something that says… natural.

Here is a quick look at what I am trying to say… forgive my penmanship.

Thank you. Yeah, my grasp of anatomy has come a long way…but it is still very much lacking. I totally understand you don’t need to be an expert to realize something is wrong with it…I even kind of felt there was…but when you’re working on your own in a vacum it helps to get that third eye to give you an idea of where you’re going wrong.
Don’t worry about offending me…I appreciate all input. I did look at your examples and looked at some more reference and I think I got an idea about what you meant.
I suppose it’s for the best as I could stand to reevaluate the seams and the texture, so I went back to an early version of the mesh and started working with the proportions again. I don’t know if it’s “there” yet, but I think I’ve improved it:
And yes, I do know my back muscles are really funky looking right now. On my list of things flesh out further.
Hey Kmkenpo! Thanks for your contribution to make this forum a better place. Great job guys. The superman look amazing initially and after the adjustment.
Eiad… that means a great deal to me, thank you.
Sepharih… the “back to base” adjustments look a great deal more in-line with that natural feel. Very interested in seeing the final work of this piece, which makes me wonder, are we every really finished with art. Were Donatello, Michelangelo or Bernini fully pleased with their works, or were they possibly forced to release something less than perfect, so that the rest of us mortals could admire their efforts?
Have a blessed day,

Eiad… just noticed that you are from Savannah. Born and raised there, moved when I was ten. Great place, a great deal of really fond memories there. Not trying to hijack the thread, just wanted to blurt that out.
Now, back to the Superman coolness.
Have a blessed day,
